I recall something similar involving a group of French pilots who flew beside the Soviets. I don't remember if it was on the forum or not, but I'm pretty sure it was in the documentary series The Unknown War (an amazing, if somewhat propagandized account of events). There was even footage of an award ceremony!

That was the Normandie-Niemen squadron.
