HenkWillem Posted July 5, 2009 Author Posted July 5, 2009 The citation:close upclose upHe has got the medal as a brave and decisive scout in the period from 14 januari 45.On the breacktrough of the german defense he gave the staff on the right time the right info and he saved a wounded scout from the battlefield.By the capture of the city Gadom he was part of a exploring group on foot and he met a group of Germans. He began to shoot at them and killed approximately 8 germans and saved 3 wounded soldiers from the battlefield.
HenkWillem Posted July 5, 2009 Author Posted July 5, 2009 And the final documents. This are all the awards that are awarded to that brigade. He is number 10 from page 4 (photo 2)
Guest Rick Research Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 He had an outstanding war record to have received those awards as an ordinary Private and Yefreiter. The fact that he was attending Officer Candidate School in 1946 suggests you should probably request his personnel file...maybe he never graduated and remained in the ranks... but he might have been serving as an officer into the late 1950s or beyond. He was young enough to have caught up rapidly with the normal age groups for officer promotion.

HenkWillem Posted July 5, 2009 Author Posted July 5, 2009 and privates does also have them? And not only officers?
Guest Rick Research Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Enlisted men will NOT have personnel files-- but he was at an Officer Candidate School, so presumably was commissioned unless he flunked the course.

Paul R Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Ah on that way. Thank you for the advice. I will try to get his file.I look forwad to seeing what you may come up with!
Ferdinand Posted July 5, 2009 Posted July 5, 2009 Yes, he was indeed decorated pretty wel for a Corporal.I'm not sure if attending and passing a school necessarily resulted in obtaining an officer's rank, but we'll see if a service history can be found...
HenkWillem Posted July 6, 2009 Author Posted July 6, 2009 I have a question:Why is the first decoration (the medal for bravery) on the second page of his regestrationcard strike through?
Guest Rick Research Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Just some random reviewer's scratching. All the awards are stamped showing they were verified. It could have been something as trivial as a clerk being annoyed that the Medal had been entered before the Red Star, out of chronological sequence and precedence in wear.
