Blowing the dust off, started looking at Tanzania again last night. I last looked at that section of my site in 2013!

The Order of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere (Nishani ya Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere) was instituted in December 2011 and is awarded to retired democratically-elected presidents of Tanzania, with the first awards being made in 2011 to the then three people who qualified. Nyerere had already died by then, the insignia was presented to his widow. Two more awards have subsequentally been made in 2024, one of those posthumous.

As you can imagine with such limited criteria for award, images of the insignia are hard to find. Finding a few images of the presentations, it appears to have a collar, a sash and badge, and a star... but even these pictures are very indistinct.

Next, I've revisited the Order of the Torch of Kilimanjaro (Nishani ya Mwenge Wa Kilimanjaro). I think it was established in 1973, but the few sources I've found vary a bit, some say 1977.

Not much to add to what I have previously said, but I think that the Class 1 insignia consists of a sash with badge and a star. The star and badge both look very similar. Class 2 is a neck badge. As for Class 3, no idea. Some sources state that there are 4 classes...

It's awarded to heads of state (Class 1), heads of government(Class 2), and governmental ministers (Class 3). I understand it may be awarded to Tanzanian citizens as well as to foreigners.

No new images to present, alas, but the badge is an oval medallion with a blunt toothed design around its outer edge. At the centre of the badge is an enamelled oval depicting a flaming torch standing on top of Mount Kilimanjaro. This image is surrounded by a band of blue enamel inscribed with the name of the Order MWENGE WA KILIMANJARO [TORCH OF KILIMANJARO].

Yesterday I added what appears to be the next highest order, the Order of the United Republic of Tanzania (Nishani ya Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania)... but apart from the name and the ribbon colours, can I find any information or images? Can I heck as like!!

The next one will be the Order of the Declaration of Arusha (Nishani ya Azimio la Arusha), and I haven't found much more about that - 3 classes, I know what the ribbon looks like, and I found one star... oh, and it's awarded for political services.

This is very frustrating but great fun as well!

    Hello Gentlemen,

Yes this is the Order of the Torch of Kilimanjaro

1st Photo a sash badge of a 1st Class ( reverse is plain, just for an eyelet and a ring to attach to a sash. This sash badge is 85 Millimeters by 72 Millimeters and its weight is 173 grammes. A superb 3 parts construction badge.

2nd Photo a neck badge ? or part of a Grand Officer set, but on display in the Legion of Honor Museum Paris (ex collection Spada)

3rd Photo is what I do believe is the 3rd Class of the Order of the Torch of Kilimanjaro ( ex Spink Publication from the 1990ies ).

    Regards to all.

         Emmanuel

Due to the ribbon on the background, and sorry that photo was taken a long time ago before I had a good smart phone .

This could be the breast star of Order Mwani Julius Nyerere

I would like Megan to focus the attention that also exist a Julius Nyerere Prize ( it's a silver neck badge hung from a plain dark green neck ribbon ). I bet this prize is NOT related to the Order

I have Mwenge na Uhuru as a title for this photo.

    Anyways it's better than nothing.

I saw this star in a private show room of a London Manufacturer, it is huge in size, likely 12 centimeter.

    Regards.

    Hello Gentlemen,

In 2021, on the hammer was auctioned in London, this sash badge ( or neck badge ) of the Order of the Arusha Declaration

It is 68 millimeters high, 65 millimeters in its maximal with, and has a weight of 65 grammes.

I'am a bit sad not to get the sash with hook to attach to it.

    Regards.

More internet ferreting around has come up with this. My rudimentary Swahili suggests it's an award to mark the 50th anniversary of the union that formed Tanzania.

This would seem to be the same as the large star Emmanuel posted earlier - it seems that a multi-class order was instituted just to mark the anniversary.

Yet Ilya's images at the top of this page for the "Nishani ya Kumbukumbu ya Miaka 50 ya Muungano" which translates to "Medal of the 50th anniversary of the Union" look quite different... this has at least 4 classes and a collar.

    Howdy Megan,

I'm unfamiliar with this, and any, Tanzanian awards. However, there are 5 images of a Tanzanian Medal of Valour (Nishani ya Ushujaa) on a current eBay listing (https://www.ebay.com/itm/304456408847). This 3rd Class (?) Commander neck badge made by Worth was apparently awarded in 2016.

Above are 3 images of the obverse of this neck badge. All of these images from eBay are moderately high resolution and can be zoomed for some additional details.

Reverse of this example with the "WORTH" name and the "925" for the silver purity underneath the makers name.

Two slightly different oblique views of this neck badge showing some details of its construction.

The description states: "Zanzibar / Tanzania Order of Valour Courage (Nishani ya Ushujaa), Commander Neck Badge Medal. Zanzibar, Order of Valour (Nishani ya Ushujaa), Commander’s neck badge, 2016, by Worth, in silver-gilt and enamel, reverse marked ‘Worth’ with the silver mark ‘925’; 59mm width, with original neck ribbon,  it was awarded to recipients in just one ceremony in 2016, with just 5-10 made. The designs were then discontinued the following year, making these extremely rare."

I know of this, thank you, Rusty. It's from Zanzibar, which was formed by the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar (but is autonomous with its own government). It's the Tanzananian medal I am looking for...

But many thinks. I'll find the right place for this eventually.

Trouble is, they both speak Swahili so searches on the local name keeps throwing this beastie up!
