Bob Hunter Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 I wonder if this guy was in avaiation or just a super grunt?
Stogieman Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 That's a great little bar, with a nice DRP backing plate in field-gray.And still the only Thuringian war Cross I've seen on a ribbon bar!
Bob Hunter Posted December 9, 2005 Author Posted December 9, 2005 Was the Thuringian War Cross strictly a military decoration?
Stogieman Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 Yes, the Sax-Coburg Gothe Kriegserinnerungszeichen was strictly a military/war cross.1916-18, 1922 then in its' most familiar form as both a pinback/ribbonned cross from 1927 forward, but details on the actual awarded numbers/details has always been a little sketchy.
David Gregory Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 Was the Thuringian War Cross strictly a military decoration? If I recall correctly, Nimmergut lists it as a military award, but the only example I have suggests that it was certainly issued to non-combattant. I posted my bar and the pinback version at http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=1201&hl=gothaThe very nice example above is also the first one I have ever seen on a ribbon bar and indicates that it was also awarded to combattants. From the order the ribbons are mounted, I would guess that the wearer was a Bavarian who served in or with units from Th?ringen. Can anyone else show an example of the Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha award?
Stogieman Posted December 9, 2005 Posted December 9, 2005 hmmmm, not sure why it cut me off....... anyway, your bar is a post 1935 bar with the the HKwX on there, but still most interesting with the combination of awards. Now, because it wasn't instituted until 1927, or rather adapted in 1927 from its' original form of strictly a pin-back to a ribboned award I don't know if it shows up in any of the ranklists for WW2.
Daniel Murphy Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 (edited) Here is my SCG Kriegserinnerungszeichen. It appears to match David's in every way except the wear. The piece on the right was just used to keep it level for the photo, it is not part of the cross.Dan Murphy Edited December 10, 2005 by Daniel Murphy
Daniel Murphy Posted December 10, 2005 Posted December 10, 2005 Here is the reverse, the photo is pin down to show the simple pinback on these.Dan Murphy
Guest Rick Research Posted December 11, 2005 Posted December 11, 2005 Without award documents, this NCO is forever lost.
Stogieman Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 and there in lies one of the many head-bangers of Imperial. No docs, no published roles and who knows if they'll ever surface. Still a darn spiffy bar!!
Stogieman Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 One of the many things I thought was neat was the FG war-time backing plate with the DRP patent mark. You do not see that very often and I have often wondered why!
