Chris Boonzaier Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 One of my guys seems to have been awarded the Swedish order of the Sword... Does anyone know how this could happen? Could neutral countries give out medals to armies fighting a war? Thanks Chris
Hauptmann Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 They were often awarded for long or useful service. So not just for valor in times of war. Hope this helps. Dan
kimj Posted January 1, 2011 Posted January 1, 2011 It's probably for helping some Swedish citizen or Swedish interest. The order was officially a long service award for Swedish officers, and bravery award in times of war (in our case Napoleonic days). But could be awarded to helpful foreign military personal. If I remember correctly explorer Sven Hedin handed out some orders to Germans when he was touring the eastern front. I'm sure other groups of front-line tourists needed help too. /Kim

Thanks Chris When a foreign military, naval or air attaché left Sweden after completing his turn of duty here (usually approx 4 years), he was awarded the Order of the Swords. This order was also given to high persons visiting Sweden or serving interests common to Swedish, for example Finnish Field Marshal Mannerheim who received the order from visiting Prince Gustaf Adolf.
Chris Boonzaier Posted January 2, 2011 Author Posted January 2, 2011 Hi, the guy in question was a senior NCO in an infantry regiment.... http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=46774&st=0 Best Chris
Kvart Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 (edited) I think Herman Göring was awarded the grand cross of the Order of the Sword in February 1939. Here seen with Swedish king Gustav V. Edited January 20, 2011 by Kvart
FRE_A_K Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 Old Topic... but, yes. Grand Cross of the Order of the Sword (with collar) was given to mr. Göring 2/2/1939.
