army historian Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Hello all, I usually do not collect french - but got this great group from Chris B. I do not read French - so need help in reading and translating this page from his Military book. Thanks and cheers Captain Albert
Chris Boonzaier Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Hi, the column "A la Mer" are the dates he was at sea, the "A Terre" was on shore, so the corresponding "Terre" names are places (Brest, Toulon etc) and by the "Mer" they are ships names (Hard to read) If I remember correctly, somewhere there is an entry that this sailor did not speak French either ;-)
Dave Danner Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 The ship names look like "Ariege", "Wagram" "?" and "Cuvier". I can't find a reference for the French navy in that timeframe, but there have been a number of ships with those names over the years (except for the one I can't read). I guess the ports are Brest, Lorient and Toulon?
army historian Posted September 24, 2011 Author Posted September 24, 2011 Thank you both - that is helpful. One of the ones you can't read is the Transport Aveyron. He went to Vietnam on her and earned the Tonkin Medal. On their return the Ship was ship wrecked on the Horn of Africa. Cheers Captain Albert
