wingnut1269 Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 We are liquidating my Grandma's estate and came across this. It is made in England by Christy's. Seems to be named, and includes a badge number....I'm assuming. Any help in identifying and value would be appreciated! <a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc14/wingnut1269/Constable%20hat/?action=view&current=IMG_3571.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc14/wingnut1269/Constable%20hat/IMG_3571.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc14/wingnut1269/Constable%20hat/?action=view&current=IMG_3572.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc14/wingnut1269/Constable%20hat/IMG_3572.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc14/wingnut1269/Constable%20hat/?action=view&current=IMG_3573.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc14/wingnut1269/Constable%20hat/IMG_3573.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc14/wingnut1269/Constable%20hat/?action=view&current=IMG_3576.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc14/wingnut1269/Constable%20hat/IMG_3576.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s219.photobucket.com/albums/cc14/wingnut1269/Constable%20hat/?action=view&current=IMG_3577.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc14/wingnut1269/Constable%20hat/IMG_3577.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
Brian Wolfe Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Hello, You have a nice example of a British Police Helmet also known as a Custodian's Helmet. From the helmet plate on the front you can tell it has the Queen's Crown and the ciper of Queen Elizabeth II. The value of these runs from around $60.00 to $80.00 depending on the quality and rarity of the helmet plate. You can see many examples for sale on eBay to give you an idea of the price range. The number is the Police Constable's number and what I think is his last name. I suppose it would be possible to find out more information about this officer since you know the police department (on the helmet plate), his last name and best of all his number. A very nice example and quite complete. I hope this is of some help. Regards Brian
Mervyn Mitton Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 The name sounds Swedish ? Perhaps it was an exchange gift to him - pity Leigh isn't still here - he was Cambridgeshire Const. and could have checked the number.
wingnut1269 Posted October 16, 2011 Author Posted October 16, 2011 Wow....identifying the person would be AWESOME!! Is that person not on here at all anymore? Or just not often? I was hoping to list the helmet today, but it would kill me if I sold it and it turned out to be something or someone very extraordinary.
Craig Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Isn't the Badger still here? I think he was a Cambridgeshire Special.
Mervyn Mitton Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Craig - I'll ask Ian Shepherd to tell him - they know each other.
wingnut1269 Posted October 17, 2011 Author Posted October 17, 2011 This is so cool! Thank you for your help, everyone! I emailed Cambridgeshire Constabulary and I got an email back today. They are sending my info request to the HR department to see what they can come up with!! I am so excited about this process so far! This isn't just a hat.....it's personalized.....a real person wore this.....and that makes it SO exciting! Please still contact your friends. I am totally interested in everything I can come up with on this!
Ian Shepherd Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Craig - I'll ask Ian Shepherd to tell him - they know each other. I have sent the badger an email. Ian
The Badger Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Wingnut1269 contacted me via my web site so I have given him some information as to when the helmet was issued. The following is further info that I have found but I can’t take credit for this information it was supplied to me by my friend the ex curator of the force museum form his records and research. I have asked the Cambs NARPO branch if any of there members know of him. I await a reply. Svard PC789 not listed in any of the force records that exist, but found SVARD listed in the Chief Constables report for 1976, and listed as leaving the force and transferring to the Metropolitan police on 11/07/1976. A part from this I have no other information from police records. I have found the below information on Ancestry.com which refers to his Birth Death (died aged 51) and possible marriage / s Birth Name: Olof J A Svard Mother's Maiden Surname:Callan Date of Registration:Apr-May-Jun 1950 Registration district:Hammersmith Inferred County: Greater London, Middlesex Volume Number: 5c Page Number: 970 Death Name: Olof John A Svard Birth Date: 6 Jun 1950 Date of Registration: Feb 2002 Age at Death: 51 Registration district: Portsmouth Inferred County: Hampshire Register number: C71A District and Subdistrict: 4971C entry number: 100 Olof J A Svard married Doyle Jul-Aug-Sep 1968 Ealing Middlesex Olof J A Svard married Farrell Feb 1991 Harrow olof J A Svard married Errington Jan 2002 Harrow Olof J A Svard married Lynch Jan 2002 Harrow I don't know if these are all his marriages but he is the only O J A SVARD I could find
wingnut1269 Posted October 18, 2011 Author Posted October 18, 2011 Wow....very cool. I'm hoping for some story about how he saved the world or something! hahaha
GRA Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 The name sounds Swedish ? He surely has to have had a Swedish father or being born in Sweden (I assume with dual citizenship since he were allowed to join the police). There ought to be some paperwork on this fellow somewhere in the archives! /Jonas
Tony Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) Interesting too that he married two women in Jan 2002 (if he indeed is the only OJA Sward) and then died the following month in Feb. 2002. Tony Edited October 19, 2011 by Tony
Chris Boonzaier Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Interesting too that he married two women in Jan 2002 (if he indeed is the only OJA Sward) and then died the following month in Feb. 2002. Tony He must have been a Goer eh squire... nudge nudge... wink wink.... Well its a lesson to be learned... he who marries 2 women a year wont live long....
Mervyn Mitton Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 I think Chris is right - two does sound excessive ! I have never come across - in any research - someone with a Swedish name. He must have had a British Mother - perhaps from World War 2 ? Strange, a simple picture of a current helmet and yet - all of this mystery ? Just what we like............
GRA Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 I have never come across - in any research - someone with a Swedish name. He must have had a British Mother - perhaps from World War 2 ? From post #16: Birth Name: Olof J A Svard Mother's Maiden Surname:Callan Date of Registration:Apr-May-Jun 1950 Registration district:Hammersmith Inferred County: Greater London, Middlesex Volume Number: 5c Page Number: 970 Callan is certainly not a Swedish name, but what strikes me is that he uses Swedish spelling in his surname - Svärd - not anglicised into Svard (dropping non-English alphabet letter) or Sword (translated). Wouldn't it be slightly complicated living the whole life in the UK spelling one's surname "Svärd"? /Jonas
Tony Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Wouldn't it be slightly complicated living the whole life in the UK spelling one's surname "Svärd"? /Jonas My surname can be found in the doomsday book but I still have to spell it and then the person writing it down usually spells it wrong. Although there are many English place names that are obviously Scandinavian in origin (at least in Essex), always having to spell Svard could make life complicated. Tony
