azyeoman Posted January 21 Author Share Posted January 21 Here's the latest acquistions for this tiny collection. They are in In the Name of a Living God by Paul Murphy and Steven Ackley. (page 61) The are commemorative awards of the Patriotic Women's Association and in this case are Obi Dome badges. The top one is "made from coinage metal and enamel and was issued to commemorate the 35th General Assembly of the society, which took place in 1936. The design is based on a deconstruction of the various elements of the society membership badge such as the anchor, star and cherry blossom. The quality of the manufacture is very high. Each delegate attending the 35th General Assembly received this badge..." It is reasonably scarce. (0.89" high by 1.9" wide) The bottom one is another Obi Dome badge celebrating the 3rd General Assembly of the Hiroshoma Branch. It too is of the same high quality manufacture and is made from coinage metal and enamel. The reverses are shown with the kanji inscriptions. azyeoman Posted June 17 Author Share Posted June 17 (edited) I've always found the Yata-no-Karasu badges most interesting due to the Three-legged Raven story in Japanese mythology. Here are the three I've recently acquired consisting of the Ordinary Member's Badge , the Supporting Member's badge and lastly the Tokubetsu type or Special Member's Badge with the green border around the central oval. According to Murphy and Ackley, the Tokubetsu was awarded to officers in the organization. They are all very well made with excellent enamel work. Murphy & S.L.Ackley "In the Name of a Living God" one can read, I quote: " is only 0.75 inches high. One of the association's chapters issued it to commemorate a visit by the Emperor. It comes in a balsa wood box 1.75 inches long and 2.225 inches wide and unfortunately does not indicate the year of the visit. The reverse of the badge has the characters for "Commemorative Badge". All of the box exemples seen have had an error in the inscription on the lid that has been crudely rubbed out. The inside of The box has a sticker for Asahi badge Manufacturers in the lid an an unfitted navy blue cloth base." On this box lid one can read: - page 31st Fig. 3.12 in the very good book of Mister P.L.
