The Wernitz book has shown that in the case of pre1916 awards from the high command, these letters WERE the preliminary award document. In 1916 they issued started to issue official Preliminary docs for High command awards, until then, this was "it".

A nice Belgian connection, as von der Goltz was the military governer in belgium in this early phase... for that he got this EK1. One of the very few pics where he has an EK1 on...

    Hi,

Although Eichhorn's document has 2. Garde landwehr Regiment, Andy has sent me the following info....

    "v. Eichhorn was in 2.GRz.F. "

"v.d. Goltz is a bit trickier. He entered the army in IR 41 on 25.04.1861 and transferred from that regiment on 24.09.1870 to GR 8 (while attached to the Gen St. of II. AK) ."

So it is not so clear where v.d. Goltz was when he recieved his 1870 EK2

If you knew how much the v.d. Goltz cost you would have said "WOW!!!!!!!" .... it was totally overlooked by all other bidders....

    Well done!!

This is an obvious Gem to go with the v.d. Goltz Document..... it has him as GFM, with an EK1, and the Brussels connection.... where he was, only for a couple of months.... when he got the EK1
