Claudius Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 These are just wearing saving medals. the first one being a sailor by the way... Ch. Saving medals?!? Saving what? From too much uniform showing through. Lady Godiva could be clothed with that array. It's the European equivalent to the Senninbari belt.
Christophe Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Saving medals?!? Saving what? From too much uniform showing through. Lady Godiva could be clothed with that array. It's the European equivalent to the Senninbari belt. I believe the exact name to be 'Life saving medals"... Ch.
JapanX Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 ... the first one being a sailor by the way... You don't say! These are just wearing saving medals I wonder how many poor souls were saved because of these two modest heroes ...
Christophe Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 You don't say! Sorry, Nick, What do you mean ? Ch.
JapanX Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 I meant vous m'en direz tant! During the reign of Alexandre II Russia had only one medal for "life saving activities" (to be more precise "за подвиги человеколюбия, с опасностью собственной жизни совершенные, но не подходящие под действие орденских статутов"). It was the medal "За спасение погибавших" (it was established by Nikolay I in 1828). Personally I don't see it among the trinkets on the chest of this brave sailor Regards, Nick
Christophe Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 (edited) In your opinion, what are these medals ? Couldn't they be local / regional ones, like in some countries (opposed to national ones) ? Cheers. Ch. Edited July 26, 2013 by Christophe
JapanX Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 Probably a) shipping company awards b) department of navigation awards c) charity awards Cheers, Nick
Mathomhaus Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 (edited) Last winter I read a review of a new book about two 19th C female entertainers who performed successfully all over Europe, usually with one or both appearing in drag. I wonder if this could be them? If we can take our eyes off all of the medals for a moment and look at the face, it really does seem that "he" isn't what he appears to be... JapanX Posted November 2, 2013 Author Posted November 2, 2013 These are just wearing saving medals. the first one being a sailor by the way... Ch. Now I understand Christophe hypothesis ...
JapanX Posted November 2, 2013 Author Posted November 2, 2013 Check out the chest of this french lifeboat crew member veteran!
Phil2012 Posted November 3, 2013 Posted November 3, 2013 Hello, friends! I also think that these pics feature lifeboat crew members. Here, in France, such people can be awarded with a lot of medals as you can see on this new picture:
