Gensui
I guess, some "chemical" (?) polish on the surface as well. Especially the back side looks like treatend by any acid/polishing...
Paul R
How many people were awarded this medal? Was it only for Japanese Kwantung Army personnel?

JapanX
How many people were awarded this medal? Was it only for Japanese Kwantung Army personnel? According to the statute this medal was awarded to those who were invited to Enthronement or performed official duties during Enthronement. Also prime minister office could award anybody at discretion ;) Edited September 21, 2013 by JapanX
utopis
Looks rather hand polished. Chemicals would remove a patina evenly and in the deepest spots. But here the deeper areas aren't cleaned. That's were a cloth (or whatever was used) can't reach the surface.

Maybe some special cotton, which is used for silver necklace etc. Yep, please send this one to me ... Gensui
How many people were awarded this medal? Was it only for Japanese Kwantung Army personnel? Paul, I will dig into my sources and will try to find some figures. But I am sure, it won't be easy to figure out any figures or numbers!
