Joe Sweeney Posted October 21, 2013 Posted October 21, 2013 I'm looking to complete a display and wanted to find out if it is true that the Bavarian bayonet frog was cut with a point vice rounded? I have not come across any references in my source documents but have heard several dealers saw the Bavarian frogs came to a point unlike the rounded versions used by the rest of the Army? Is this true? Any help appreciated. Joe Sweeney
Hoss Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Joe Thats correct the Bavarian facing has a 'necktie' look on the 98/05 frog some with straight sides not sure on the smaller 84/98. Eric
Chris Boonzaier Posted October 22, 2013 Posted October 22, 2013 Hi, I never knew WW1 era bavarian frogs were any different to the rest. Does anyone have any Photos? Thanks Chris
Joe Sweeney Posted October 22, 2013 Author Posted October 22, 2013 Eric, Very much appreciated. I will post a photo of my pointy frog so folks can say whether its Bavarian or even German. Joe Sweeney
Hoss Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Chris There was one on ebay for weeks but the dude wanted too much for the 98/05 bayo I was in two minds to buy it and resell the bayonet. This is an example why it can become confusing a run of the mill frog with Bavarian issue stamp 1916, fine very nice but it wasn't Bav. made. Pics courtesy of the BCN. Where's me chum Chip Eric
Chris Boonzaier Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Can you put a "regular" one for comparision? Its not my collecting field... but I need some!!!
Joe Sweeney Posted October 25, 2013 Author Posted October 25, 2013 Eric, Thanks. Chris, I think that one is run of mill (all other German states)--but Bavarian marked. Eric is that correct? Joe Sweeney
Hoss Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 Yes Here's an early Bavarian frog its been well used it may even fit an 98/02 but shows the 'V' front at least they had a close to edge crease mark.. Belgium had one also but it widens at the shoulders then tapers, I noticed the v cut on this frog some Germans did that so a soldier could pull out the bayonet & scabbard, if you wear a bayonet and sit... get up lay down get up and take off a lot you'll know what I mean. If I'm wrong hope to be corrected its old news maybe some more info is available now I don't have my bav. frogs anymore to show sorry. Eric
Joe Sweeney Posted October 25, 2013 Author Posted October 25, 2013 Eric, Thanks for the photos--I have one that looks like to the one on the left thankfully. Joe Sweeney
Joe Sweeney Posted October 27, 2013 Author Posted October 27, 2013 I'm hoping this is Great War Bavarian bayonet frog??? It is dyed black on the front after manufacture and left brown on the back. Joe Sweeney
Fritz die Spinne Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Here is my frog, marked 149 | BD III | 1915 The idea of a "necktie" detail being a Bavarian detail is news to me, and exciting! I think I have seen them and been told they were not German.
