Marcin L Posted November 30, 2013 Posted November 30, 2013 (edited) Dear All, I would appreciate help locating the 7 Garde-Infanterie-Regiment on 4 Jan 1915. I have a letter sent on this date and would like to describe the location of this unit (1 Bataillon). By the way - do I understand it correctly that 7GIR was created in 1915 from 2 Garde Ersatz Regiment? According to some sources the unit was created later during the war. Below is part of the letter, I guess this is Bois Brûlé (The Burned Forest). It however doesn't fit with information from Ruhmeshalle (page 79), saying that the unit was there from 6 October 1915 to 23 July 1916. Regards, Marcin Edited November 30, 2013 by Marcin L
Marcin L Posted November 30, 2013 Author Posted November 30, 2013 By the way, check an interesting press report from this battle - http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/15591470#pstart1275276
The Prussian Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 (edited) Hello Marcin! The regiment was set-up august, 1., 1915. by renaming of the 2.Garde-Ers.Rgt. Generally it was under command of the Garde-Ers.Brig. (Garde-Ers.Div.). The fights of the Bois-Brulé were 6.10.15-23.7.16 by the Garde-Ers.Div. (Armee-Abt. Strantz) The battles of the Garde-Ers.Div. in january 1915 were: 18.9.14-20.2.16: Fights between Maas and Mosel (28.9.14-27.4.15: Fights at Flirey) Edited December 1, 2013 by The Prussian
Marcin L Posted December 1, 2013 Author Posted December 1, 2013 Thank you for this! Great map, by the way. So do you have any idea why the letter is dated 1 January 1915, Bois Brûlé? You can find it here: http://www.imperialgermanmilitaria.com/index.php/photos/branch/infantry/84-7-garde-infanterie-regiment Please note the "Zum Erinnerung... 1915" on the upper left corner.
The Prussian Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 Hi Marcin! Probably the unit was in the Bois brûlé. It was a quiet front. The official battles started in october, but the regiment could be january almost there
Chris Boonzaier Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 The letter is from the 4th January 1916, not 15... answer to the secret ;-)
Chris Boonzaier Posted December 1, 2013 Posted December 1, 2013 That may be the answer! :-) Indeed... if the paper itself was only given out at X-Mas 1915.... then I think a date slip.... also note, the Bois Brule and date were written probably with different pencil.... so maybe the guy quickly added a date later and slipped up....
