Chris Boonzaier Posted December 21, 2013 Posted December 21, 2013 I promised myself i would steer clear of spiked helmets, but as this one was one of the regiments the wifes greatgrandfather served in, I thought I would buy it. I posted it years ago, apparently this KKK like Helmet cover is typical for the G.R. 101
Chip Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Was your wife's great-grandfather a reserve officer?
Chris Boonzaier Posted December 22, 2013 Author Posted December 22, 2013 Was your wife's great-grandfather a reserve officer? Hi, Yup, first in I.R. 182, then in G.R. 101, then back to I.R 182, Best Chris
Chris Boonzaier Posted December 24, 2013 Author Posted December 24, 2013 You asking me?? :-) The only thing i know about Picklehaube is that they would be painful to sit on. I just wanted it because of the "101" Does it not fit the helmet?
Adler 1 Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 Lovely helmet and cover! The cover looks like a rare variation... I've only seen a few of this model before... Adler 1
Chris Boonzaier Posted October 27, 2015 Author Posted October 27, 2015 Hi,is the cover an officers or "other ranks" ?I assume officers had the hooks on early ones as well? BestChris
Chip Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Officer's covers were normally form-fitted types with a "pouch" on the front and back that slipped over the visors. There was an elastic section on each side of the cover that would expand for easier installation and then would tighten back when the visors were covered. I'm not aware of officer's wearing the hooked type, but, of course, officers could do what they wanted.
Chris Boonzaier Posted October 27, 2015 Author Posted October 27, 2015 Hi, I was wondering if the elastic ones were introduces a bit later or if the early ones (if this was 1892 model) were maybe with hooks.
Adler 1 Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 (edited) Officers wore covers with hooks as well... Here's one worn by Prinz Alfons von Bayern... It's even a combination of the hooks in front and the "pouch" at the back... Adler 1 Edited October 28, 2015 by Adler 1
Chip Posted October 28, 2015 Posted October 28, 2015 (edited) Karel,It sort of looks like the hooks were added later on this one. It may have been converted at some point during the period? Edited October 28, 2015 by Chip
Adler 1 Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Possibly, but as you can see in the period picture, it was worn this way by Prinz Alfons and it's this one I have in my collection. Maybe altered, but with 100% provenance that it was period done...Adler 1
Chris Boonzaier Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 I still wonder if we are simply used to the elastic thing because most of what we are interested in is WW1.... the period 1895-1905 still being largely undocumented or unexplored? Maybe elastics became the mode in 1910 for example?
Stuka f Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 Hey Chris, can you check your pm please. Thanks|<ris
