claudio2574 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Hi, there are plenty of medals and badges about AOI. I don't have many. Just to begin: the colonial order of the star of Italy, class knight, and its diploma. It was awarded both to Italian and african people.
claudio2574 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Star for merit of the natives of the colonies. It's a silver star, quite scarce.
claudio2574 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 The classical commemorative medal for the AOI campaign, with the words "molti nemici molto onore" (many enemies, much honor). It exists in many variants, this one id from the royal mint. The sword on the ribbon was for the combatants.
claudio2574 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 There are many many unofficial crosses, which are not so common. Here two examples: 4th Corpo d'Armata (original, many late replicas around) 51st autogruppo
claudio2574 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 The well known medal for the indigenous Corpo d'Armata Eritreo
claudio2574 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 A.O.I. means Africa Orientale Italiana (Italian East Africa): Eritrea, Somalia, Etiopia.
RRA227 Posted January 7, 2014 Author Posted January 7, 2014 Claudio,Thanks for posting some of your stuff and answering the question. I have about 20 of the A.O.I. campaign medals. I have the Askari merit star and 2 of the Eritreo medals with no ribbons. Also Askari enameled medals. At least now I know what ribbon to look for for the medals that have none.
claudio2574 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Two more medals: the commemorative medal for the Africa campaigns, which remained unchanged with tha face of king Umberto I during the time and had a lot of bars for identifying the single campaign: and the valour medal for indigenous troops, with the face of king Vittorio Emanuele III: For reference: the action house Von Morenberg (http://www.vonmorenberg.com) in its auction no. 66 put some AOI medals. The catalog is still online. In the past they presented a big collection of badges (and some medals too), but the catalog in no more online. I should have it in some place...
RRA227 Posted January 7, 2014 Author Posted January 7, 2014 Claudio,I do have a few of those. Also found another Vol. medal. Rich A. in Pa.
medalman90 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 this a great thread. thanks to all the contributors. i saw the colonial valor medal for sale a few months back on ebay. crazy auction.
medalman90 Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 That may depend on everyone's budget. But for me it certainly was. The winner is actually apart of another online forum and posted it on the site.
