paddywhack
so i was perusing ebay looking for my next british ribbon bar when i came across this auction for a supposed real VC ribbon bar!whats striking is that the seller doesn't say its a real VC bar just that it might be to a VC winner but yet the price still went crazy!!!! just seems to me that some people have more money then sense as its just a nice ribbon bar but nothing else with out more providence!!! http://www.ebay.ie/itm/321364371257?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Guest pikemedals
Wow ! Ask the seller if he got anymore lol
paul wood
The provenance is a bit like that old song- I knew a man who danced with a girl who danced with the Prince of Wales. I will have to buy a few VC ribbons and attribute them to Guy Gibson, Chard, Bromhead and Leonard Cheshire and make up a couple of double bars attributed them to Upham, Chavasse. I see the way forward to early retirement.Paul
utopis
whats striking is that the seller doesn't say its a real VC bar Hm? In the title and in the first line of the description it says "very rare original Victoria cross ribbon bar"
paddywhack
True but look at his description!he says it "may" be to vc winner such and such!nothing else no providence just him saying it is and still it went for a crazy price!

paul wood
I can see more sense in that at least it had a cast Iron provenance. Paul
QSAMIKE
I am sitting on about 5 meters of VC ribbon that was in a tailor shop that went out of business and I bought all the ribbon he had left.... I wonder how many ribbon bars I could make up......Mike
peter monahan
Lots! That's the way to get it too. I have cornered the market for hob nails in my area by striking up an acquaintance with a shoe maker who has a bunch left over from the 1950s that nobody else knows about! Michael White
What provenance? I agree that it probably was authentic or I wouldn't have bid on it, but there was no Certificate of Authenticity or any other documentation linking it to Scrimger. And it was only the cardboard box that the Presentation Box came in. Nevertheless it was a great buy for the winner! Mike
paddywhack
and heres another auction! crazy crazy!iv a VC and DSO ribbon bar(no providence!!), i reckon i might put it up and see what it goes for!!!!! http://www.ebay.ie/itm/390832062644?ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1435.l2649 Edited May 5, 2014 by paddywhack
Michael White
I know. I was watching that but wouldn't bid for that very reason. But, I guess if you have the money and the interest who am I to disagree. Mike
Mervyn Mitton
I looked through my two volume history of VC Awards. I couldn't find Scrimger - have you actually found his name on the roll ? Mervyn
paddywhack
Here you go! http://mcgillremembers.mcgill.ca/ww1/stories/scrimger.html think his VC was recently donated to a museum!
Mervyn Mitton
Thanks - very interesting. I probably only looked on the Brit. section. Mervyn
peter monahan
I'd guess by the bidding - L 213.00 when I checked - that others share your concerns, Mike!
erichjr
Those ribbon bars are getting expensive. Erich
paddywhack
and here another one!!! http://www.ebay.ie/itm/331237787450?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Mervyn Mitton
Somehow it doesn't look right. Why should a ribbon be so tattered - something like this would be treasured and looked after. Also, I'm not happy with the size of the Cross - I think they are usually slightly smaller and of better quality. What do others think ? paddywhack
Have to agree it doesnt look original but as the title says some people have more money than sense!!!!
