Hi,

Can I assume this is a tag issued right at the start of the war? Not only due to the form, but also the company number "80" would have put him right with the first intake... ?

Hi Chris,

I think, that these dog tags had been issued first to the soldiers of the 1. Garderegiment zu Fuß, "das vornehmste Regiment der zivilisierten Christenheit".

Sources say, that they had been introduced 1869 as "Regognitionsmarke", and since 1878, but another model, as "Erkennungsmarke". And the sources say, that they had first been handed out during the mobilization in 1870.

According to Meinlschmidt, these tags were worn alongside an oval pattern up until the adoption of the M1915 tag.
