Sfenoid Posted February 23, 2018 Posted February 23, 2018 I recently acquired this JH Werner and I just want to be sure it’s authentic. It is in great condition , is it too good to be true? Also the same questions for this second medal. It looks old and authentic but has no markings, does anyone know what manufacturer? I’m new to this medals and would like to learn more. Thanks
ixhs Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 imo both fakes. the 1st one is often to find on german ebay. The sellers are mostly from the Rhineland.
laurentius Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Dear fellow collectors I agree with Ixhs, the first piece lacks a lot of quality, the tugra is terrible, and so is the islamic numeral Kind regards, Laurentius
ABTOMAT Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 Both are modern forgeries. Since around 2005 they appear very often on market and are part of a forgery series consisting of 8 different types. On ebay they are sold by 7 different ebay accounts but behind them there is only one enterprising person. He also uses his different ebay accounts to bet on his own items, always in the hope reaching a end price around 100 bucks.
Sfenoid Posted February 26, 2018 Author Posted February 26, 2018 First of all thank you very much for the responses. I am a new collector and just started learning about these. It is disheartening to see how people are trying to rip off naive collectors like me. Its very discouraging to continue to collect but at the same time I am happy to have found this forum. I hope you dont mind me showing you few more examples. I now have a pretty good idea but still wanted to share here. I am assuming these also are fakes right?
ixhs Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 yes also bad items. all shown pieces are thrash. if you want to get a good piece, have a look about a BB Co. piece. They are not so overprised and easier to find. A good period JH Werner to find is very hard. They are also very expensive. 500 - 1000 bucks. have a look at Liverpool medals.com (for example). He has a BB& Co piece for a normal price.
Sfenoid Posted February 27, 2018 Author Posted February 27, 2018 I received the items and its really hard to tell to an untrained eye. How about just the box itself? The medal doesnt seem to fit in it right but it has indentation for another type of TWM. Could the box be authentic at the least?
ixhs Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Imo also the box is a modern fake. it is made of old style to look more authentic. But wait for other opinions. There are a lot of fakes of the TWM out there. it is really a minefield. Be careful. If i were you i would look around to find a period BB&Co piece. It is the most common version.
Sfenoid Posted February 27, 2018 Author Posted February 27, 2018 Thank you for the info. I already have a BB Co and just wanted to have a variety of them.
ixhs Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 There are a lot of different pieces you can collect. Personally i like the hallmarked or mm pieces most. Pieces with screw are very hard to find. imo the rarest version is the version of JHW with "935" and Kleeblatt mark or a M. Hansen with screwback. I have only seen 2 in the last years. Sometimes you can find pieces at emedals.ca
