Lukasz Gaszewski Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 Does anybody know what has happened to the medalj.nu website? It is one of the most valuable sites regarding Scandinavian ODM. I cannot access it since the beginning of the year. It would be the great loss if the site was down.
Megan Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 The site owner passed away a while back. I'm thinking the domain name registration might have expired. Last archived in August 2019: https://web.archive.org/web/20190803154915/http://www.medalj.nu/
JohanH Posted February 3, 2020 Posted February 3, 2020 I have contacted one of the people behind medalj.nu and the site will come up again in the future. Hopefully as soon as possible I hope.

Very sorry to hear it. It was probably the best site about Scandinavian (particularly Swedish) ODMs. Axel did a great job indeed. I archived the site some three years ago, and wanted to do it again now, just before the New Year. Still, due to its size and complex structure the site was a nightmare to archive, so I decided to put it off until after the New Year and then it was already unavailable. You never know what you are going to miss. It seems that what has been stored on webarchive.org is just a small fraction of the original site. Three years ago I archived over 9,000 photos of Swedish medals alone! Axel's passing away is a huge loss to all ODM specialists and enthusiasts. Hopefully the site will be revived one day.
Micke Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Discussions are conducted between the owners of the page and Svenska Faleristika Föreningen, SFF. "Swedish Phaleristic Association" The SFF have just started there association and dosent have the funds right now to run the page. Hopefully the page will come up as soon as possible.
Megan Posted February 7, 2020 Posted February 7, 2020 Hosting can be made available at no cost, if that would help. I own the server that my site, Antonio Barrios Condecoraciones and Lucasz Gaszewski's Ribbons site and his Polish Medal site live on, and there's room for another. Server runs Linux, Apache, MySql and PHP for the techies amogst us. If you have contacts within SFF, please ask them if they want to get in touch to discuss this.
Lukasz Gaszewski Posted February 7, 2020 Author Posted February 7, 2020 Great, Megan! I felt somehow you would make this offer...
Megan Posted February 9, 2020 Posted February 9, 2020 You know me too well, Lukasz! The only charge is the domain name registration (at cost, we're happy to handle the renewals, though).
Micke Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 Yes i have connection with SFF. Im the secretary of the Association ... We will have the yearly meeting with all members in mars. I will bring it up before that with the Board.
Megan Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 OK, Micke - let me know when you have decided what you would like to do. Do you have a competent 'webhead' amogst the membership?
Kvart Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 I really hope the site comes back online. It was without doubt the absolute best site for the 3500+ Swedish medals that do exist.
Livgardist Posted February 27, 2020 Posted February 27, 2020 As one of the founders of www.medalj.nu and the owner of the domain, I'd like to clear up any misunderstandings and keep you all up to date. We chose to put the site on hold as it was just a too labour intensive task to administrate. Our original and main objective was always to show the correct order of wear on Swedish military uniforms. It grew into foreign and international orders, decorations and medals and when we expanded the admin team an immense number of historical medals were also added. This was excellent for the website, but also caused a bit of a flurry as our main objective required us to check the validity of each and every addition and keep the site simple as a tool for uniformed personnel. The costs of maintaining the website eventually became too high and the technique behind it required a substantial update. Two of our admins has indeed passed away. Rolf Hertler in 2018 and PeO Sandberg in 2013. They are sadly missed. However that has nothing to do with the closing of the website. We still own the domain and the content is saved, so you can be assured that it will eventually turn up again in some form.
