slava1stclass Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 To all: Now this is a shoot down any Soviet pilot would be proud of. Just who among our sharp-eyed forum members will be the first to properly identify the trophy? Let the contest begin...Regards,slava1stclass
Stogieman Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Albatros..... but if he shot it, why is its' head upright? I'm surprised he could get this close!
NavyFCO Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 I'm no bird expert, so I thought it looked like a seagull at first (I've seen some BIG ones before!) Albatross makes sense... though Rick is right... it looks quite... ALIVE! Dave
Riley1965 Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 I agree with it being an Albatros. Maybe he just "winged" it. It sure looks alive!!!Doc
slava1stclass Posted April 20, 2006 Author Posted April 20, 2006 To all: Yes, it's still alive. No, albatross it is not - the Soviets never occupied Midway Island! Keep those guesses coming!Regards,slava1stclass
slava1stclass Posted April 21, 2006 Author Posted April 21, 2006 (edited) To all: Let's see now, albatross, seagull and strange looking eagle - unfortunately all incorrect. Hint: This is one of the world?s heaviest flying birds ? if not the heaviest. Its principal range is located throughout southern Eurasia. As you know, the former USSR is in Eurasia. C'mon, I thought you guys prided yourselves in your research skills. Regards,slava1stclass Edited April 21, 2006 by slava1stclass
Pete A Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 Naah, now you made it too easy. Is it the Great Bustard?http://www.greatbustard.com/greatbustardframes.htmPete
slava1stclass Posted April 21, 2006 Author Posted April 21, 2006 To all: We have a winner!!!!Regards,slava1stclass
slava1stclass Posted April 21, 2006 Author Posted April 21, 2006 (edited) Ed, Precisely. She (it's the female of the species in the very first photo) can be thankful it was a fly boy manning that sniper rifle - and not a ground pounder. It might have been a different matter, however, if the encounter was while he was piloting his Yak-3. The Great Bustard is like a Ju-52 - large and slow flying.Regards,slava1stclass Edited April 21, 2006 by slava1stclass
NavyFCO Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 I still think it looks like a giant seagull. Dave
Riley1965 Posted April 21, 2006 Posted April 21, 2006 I agree!! BTW Watch the flyboy jokes...I have plenty of ground pounder jokes armed and ready Doc
