DRB 1643
I found similar badge pictures on Rich Catalano’s awesome site under Imperial Maritime Association. This badge however was not pictured so I’m assuming it is a higher class. Can someone please let me know what class this is and what these badges were awarded for? Thank you all again (especially Nick)! Tom
JapanX
帝国海事協會 - Imperial Marine Association 参等功勞章 - 3rd class merit badge 義勇艦隊建設 - construction of Volunteer Fleet (not simply "fleet construction" or another wrong translation "dutiful and brave fleet construction"). Regarding this "Volunteer fleet". The pin of this badge should bear the inscription 参等功労章 Let`s take a look at the reverse Edited January 17, 2021 by JapanX
DavidS
Thanks for posting this badge, I haven't seen a photograph of it before. Here's a composite of 3 badges from the same organisation. Also, 4 separate shots of a 6th Class badge. If possible, could you post some "square on" pictures of your badge - front, rear, in case and case lid? That would be good. 義勇艦隊建設 Volunteer Fleet Construction 六第功勞章 6th Class Merit Award 帝國海事協會 Imperial Naval Association and the 7th Class Volunteer ship construction memorial badge (including manufacturer's label) Rear 義勇艦建設記念章 Volunteer ship construction memorial badge Case 記念章 帝國海事協會 Commemorative Medal Imperial Naval Association
JapanX
Nice badges. David, please post the separate photos of the badge made by Seishukan workshop and 7th class badge (one of 4 separate shots of a 6th Class badge is in fact 7th class inside the case). P.S. Pictures were added while I was typing this Edited January 18, 2021 by JapanX

JapanX
David, these two badges are pretty rare. Could you post quality photos of obverse/reverse/case. Any labels or inscriptions inside (or at the back) the cases?

DavidS
Here are our original photographs for this badge. No labels etc on case, other than the stamp inside. Tom thanks for photographs of your 3rd class - nice & clear
JapanX
Thank you guys for these photos. The main manufacturer of "simple" badges was Tokyo workshop Gyokuhō. It is interesting to note that they used old style kanji for 3 (in seal script) at the lid of the case 参 but modern style at the pin 三

Tom Tom, take a look at recently discovered evidence regarding 3rd class https://asiamedals.info/threads/merit-badges-of-imperial-marine-association.21666/ Unfortunately I think the enamel was re-laided. Best, Nick
DRB 1643
Nick, I agree with you. The enamel work definitely does not look like it's up to the usual Japanese high quality standards. From your website was the enamel work originally blue on the third class badge? Tom
