MIC Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 Hi All, I like to present my new 1914 iron cross first class. It shows great craftsmanship. Has anyone seen such a hinge before? Thanks, Michel
Peter Cornwell Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 I've not come across that type of pin specifically but the style of fixing appears somewhat similar to that employed by DEUMER ? Collecting EKIs on the basis of their pins is a novel approach and, personally, I would be more concerned with the obverse details on this piece. I don't share your opinion on the craftmanship but I do understand its appeal.
Graf Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 interesting cross Never seen seen such pin assembly Cheers
VtwinVince Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 The oval mounting plate is known, but I've never seen that pin before either.

Hi Peter interesting comment, regarding it I have two questions; 1) Can you show a Deumer hinge you are referring to? 2) please elaborate the "I would be more concerned with the obverse details on this piece." What are your concerns? Thank you, Michel
Peter Cornwell Posted April 5, 2022 Posted April 5, 2022 Hello Michel, Sorry if my comment caused you any alarm for that was not my intention. What you have is an honest-to-goodness EKI with what others have already confirmed to you is a most unusual pin hinge. So kudos - well spotted. Hinges aren't my particular scene but DEUMER was the first maker that popped into my mind when I saw your photo. That said, a more considered opinion would better suggest SY & WAGNER or WAGNER & SOHN as manufacturers who both used very similar fixings. But no examples I can find of their output exactly match yours. My 'concern' with the obverse (bad choice of word - concern as in focus, not as in worry) merely reflects personal taste. I am no great fan of what Wernitz/Simons categorize as Core F crosses. The lack of detail on the crown and their skinny W simply don't 'float my boat' hence my comment on its craftsmanship - but everyone to their own and I do still recognise its appeal. The same source suggests that style of core is to be found predominantly on EKIs made by FRIEDLANDER or K.A.G. but their pins are nothing like that on yours. It would be good to establish the maker of your cross. You have brought it to entirely the right forum to do so. Thanks for sharing.
MIC Posted April 5, 2022 Author Posted April 5, 2022 Hi Peter, thank you for your elaborate answer, I now know what you mean. W&S was also my thought when I compare the oval plate assembly. On the core type I also agree. So now I have to go through all the databases to find this core in an WS or SW example ? Thank you, Michel
Peter Cornwell Posted April 5, 2022 Posted April 5, 2022 (edited) Michel, Good hunting. The closest match I have found to your pin is this WS stamped example. Houdoe. Edited April 5, 2022 by Peter Cornwell 1
Peter Cornwell Posted April 8, 2022 Posted April 8, 2022 Sorry MIC but I don't have a note of the original source.
