Farkas Posted April 12, 2023 Posted April 12, 2023 Hi Gents, I paid 25 quid for this lot and a beret… there are 12 badges Personally I’ve always found badges (not uniquely 😊) a minefield. Apart from a Cardiff badge (of course it was a fake) I’ve never splashed out on British badges because I just can’t tell what’s what. In this case, while the seller offered no opinion on the originality, 2 quid each and a beret chucked in seemed worth a punt… I’ve split them into 3 groups of 4 ; 4 that I think are copies 4 that I think are probably copies and 4 I think might be good… Re the 4 above… - XX Hussars feels good - 25 Cyclists has a stamp (u sucker tony!) - Both life guards badges included because they (particularly Edward vii badge) have clear details to the front. How did I do Gents? As always any thoughts welcome. cheers tony
Terry37 Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 Tony, The HG UTP badge, I am sorry to say it is a common fake. Here are pictures to show the main difference between a good and a bad UTP badge. The life Guard badge is also a common fake, as a real one will have a dangling "V". See pictures. The others are not in my area of collecting, so I cannot help with those. Terry 1

I need to get myself a good book! I don’t buy badges too often, I go through phases, I’m in one now, but I don’t spend real money on them for good reason 😊 After another look I’m moving the Edward Viii badge out of my final 4 also, The ‘cut outs’ within the crown are poor. Still that leaves me 2 that I think are good tony
Terry37 Posted July 6, 2023 Posted July 6, 2023 Hi Tony, Sorry, but teose last two are not in my area of collecting so at beast I can only say that first blush says that they are not ones I would want. The back of the Hussar badge looks artificially aged, and the maker mark on the other makes me concerend. Can you share a close up of the mark on he slider please? I can't quite make it out. Terry 1
Farkas Posted July 14, 2023 Author Posted July 14, 2023 Thanks Terry, I’ll get a picture up tomorrow 👍 tony 👍

Terry Good spot with the Hussars badge, after a bit more digging i found a good source that had their different badges, turns out the officers version was white metal/silver and it was worn blackened 👍 Here’s the maker mark on the slider. JR GAUNT LONDON (wonky!) Btw, i think this one was blackened too So...It seems it was a mistake trying to tidy them up, another lesson learned! tony 🍻
Terry37 Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 In looking back through this thread, the RSF badge is also a fake with E/W lugs, they should N/S, and there shoudl be a slight flat edge to the bomb. The JR Gaunt maker's ,ark is also fake as it was only something like 15 MM in length if that is supposed to be a wartime badge. I totally agree, buying badges is indeed a minefield, and if anyone ever tells you they never bought a fake, I would tend not to believe them. I have a box of them. But I still enjoy making the effort.I wish I could say there is a book that would tell us what to look for in all fakes, but sadly I am not aware of one. I have found looking at badges and talking to other collectors as well doing your own research is the best way to. Living in the US that is not always easy, and especially where i live, where if it doesn't have a broken cross o it you're out of luck! But being retired does give me lots of time to do research, and I have numerous files set up with details and information about badges and patches. Just FYI, here's my latest effort - a display of British Scottish badges with the appropriate tartan backing. I have all of the badges and tartan for the blank spaces, but won't have them in hand until after the first of the year., when I get my next batch shipment of buys. once I have them all the cardboard backing will be covered with red flannel and then the badges put back in place. 1

The books are good for identification but not for pointing the difference between genuine and fake as you pointed out. I see replies on here that demonstrate the need for an experienced eye. I spent hours looking up some German badge posted on here, it looked nothing like any example I found, the quality was poor and I would have bet it was a copy. Someone else luckily chipped in before me… it was genuine, they knew the maker and all the differences were normal 🤷♂️. It’s strange because when I look back at the pictures now I think they look terrible 😊 cheers tony 🍻

Terry37 Posted February 10 Posted February 10 I can say for he sure that the UTP, Life Guards and Royal Scots Fusiliers are fakes. Hope the attached pictures help and the RSF only had N-S lugs, never E-W. 1
