I just wish the photo was a bit bigger/clearer...

    Cheers

Hello Chris, I am quite sure the picture does not show von Müller. You have there a Leutnant zur See between 1914 and 1918. As Kapitän zur See Karl von Müller (Emden) was Oberleutnant zur See he only had the Zentenarmedaille. Your picture surely shows a young Hohenzollern-Prinz?!

Here is what I have for Franz Joseph Maria Ludwig Anton Thassilo Prinz von Hohenzollern-Emden, but surely I am missing a few (was he a Johanniter, Ehren- or Rechtsritter???):

Roter Adlerorden, I. Klasse mit Stern

Fürstlich Hohenzollernscher Hausorden, Ehrenkreuz I. Klasse mit Schwertern

... Schwerter zum Ehrenkreuz I. Klasse am 26. Januar 1920 mit Wirkung vom 19. Mai 1918

Königlicher Hausorden von Hohenzollern, verschiedene Stufen, zuletzt Großkomtur mit Collane (Ordenskette)

Eisernes Kreuz (1914), II. und I. Klasse

Militärverdienstorden (Bayern), IV. Klasse mit Schwertern

Couldn't be, he was Roman Catholic! Only Protestant Nobility could become members of that branch. As P.F. said, that's a "Malteser".

Do you have any source for that, or was it assumed from a picture? I think it must rather be the "Prinzenkreuz", not a minor class meant for mere mortals.

Certainly an interesting career for Imperial German Royalty!

Thank you, I didn't know Malteser wore neck orders that looked so much like Johanniter. Do you happen to know, if he was  Ehren- or Devotionsritter?

Thank you, you must be right, I see, he had the HEK1 already in 1911!

    Hello Deutschritter,

Johanniter and Malteser Orden is essentially the same thing. The Malteserorden deriving of the Johanniter Orden after fleeing to Malta in 1520- something, from Rhodos.

The Malteser Orden is Roman Catholic

The Johanniter Orden since resurrected in 1852 by Prussia is protestant.

Since he belonged to the catholic branch of Hohenzollern it would be a Malteser Orden.

Fürstlich Hohenzollernscher Hausorden Ehrenkreuz 1. kl,

    Grossherzoglich Badische Hausorden d. Treue,

Sorry, I have no idea. So far, I totally failed to understand the grades of this Catholic order of chivalry...

Can't be. This one was for EM and NCOs, while "our" Hohenzollern prince, of course, was an officer!

I'd like to add two photos of "our" Franz Joseph Prinz von Hohenzollern-Emden that were sold recently on ebay, to be found here and here. Both were probably taken on the occasion of his wedding to Saxon Princess Maria Alix in 1921.
