zook Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 (edited) [attachmentid=39708]Stogieman and Marshall - thanks for the tips on sources... I fell back on my old source Detlev Niemann for the purchase of my first 1813 cross - (he was probably happy to oblige .. Anyway, the cross has two hairline cracks in the core, but I think it has nice early features, stepped center, and solid silver frame... pictured at left.. Dan Edited May 16, 2006 by zook

Stogieman Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 Yikes! Slip those rings back under the ribbon folds on that 2X NC EK2 bar and tilt up where it belongs! ;>)

zook Posted May 17, 2006 Author Posted May 17, 2006 Thanks for the comments guys! Bob - to answer your question, it is a "57" RK in the photo. I have a few of them, some nice, early versions...some not. Don't wish to get too far out of the imperial realm, but I must comment that I wish I would have bought a period RK when I was "young and stupid" - vice now (over 40 w/4 young kids!!!). I don't think I could justify (sleep at night) paying current market prices for a basic RK (no provenance)...Regarding the German Cross - my opinion only, but that is one "57" award that I believe was improved upon! Beyond political implications, I thought the 3rd Reich award was just somewhat ugly. I like the design with the EK in the center. My imperial EK1s (top left) are all various types (vaults, screwbacks) of 1914 crosses...so I think I will set my sights on a nice 1870 EK1 down the road! Dan
