Ramblinfarms
Could any of you Gentlemen steer me towards an online resource for a good overview of Soviet Medals and Orders? Reading these threads and seeing the photos has really peaked my interest. I doubt I'll collect them, but I would like to learn a little.Out of curiosity, what is the Soviet "equivalent" to the Iron Cross, if such a beast exists?Chris Edited June 25, 2006 by Ramblinfarms

Riley1965
I forgot about your question regarding the Soviet Equivalent of the Iron Cross. That would depend on which Class of the EK. An EK 1st Class may be the equivalent of the Order of the Red Star (See my Avatar). An EK 2nd Class would probably equate to the Medal for Combat Service or the Medal for Valor. I hope this helps. Ramblinfarms
Thank you very much, Darrell. I've got some good reading ahead of me this quiet Sunday afternoon. Ed_Haynes
Are you limiting this to online stuff? There is a good bit of discussion here on books and other normal reference materials. Unless you can read the Russian on the Mondovor site, you will need to actually read books to get good information. And I'm not sure that seeking trans-national equivalents will work very well. The comparative psychology and philosophy of various awards is just too different, reflecting different political and social systems. And isn't that part of the interest?!? Ramblinfarms
I Understand. I want to just get started with online, but I realize there is no substitute for a good research reference library. I enjoyed the thread about the "Red Bible" for instance.Comparing awards between countries is probably like the cliche about "apples and oranges", but it is a useful navigation point for a newbie, I suppose. Thanks for starting me down the hiking trail, but I realize that I have only really just signed the Registration Book.
