I gave it a 180 degree spin (and a little tug like one might give an errant bow tie)... and whadda ya know. It's possible that this side of the ribbon is the "front" - perhaps the "other" side received its abrasion from the jacket material against which it lay, and somehow and at some time got spun around in the ring.
