    1. Well, here is a question for a champion. The 11. bayerische Infanterie Division lost heavily on the Chemin des Dames in July-September 1917. Included were 3 Ritters of the Max-Joseph Orden who were killed with a single artillery shell !!!!! It may be a useless bit of info... but does anyone know who the were...
    2. Its not easy. There are a number of different deppartments responsible for different medals. After almost 10 years of putting it off I started to claim the ones I am still missing. Jaques Calero helped me get a couple of Foreign awards some years back. That worked well as they were issued by the Legion HQ (I guess they had a stock of blank docs and fill them out as needed. The veterans affairs dept of the army is processing 2 other requests, they have to check a number of things but it seems they are making a bit of progress, the document for one of the medals arrived last week. A simple campaign medal, which I assumed would be the easiest to claim has taken a few years and I still have heard nothing after 3 letters to them. This claim is direct to the army. I would say, go for it, you have nothing to loose.
    3. Tons of Soviet stuff. None with paperwork. I guess it was sold as scrap metal content to the Turkish bazaar folks... but they cottoned on quick and their are few if any bargains.
    4. Deutsche Infanterie: Das Ehrenmal der Vordersten Front. I just bought the above book for almost EUR100 (postage included). After I bought it (has still no arrived) I read it is not ONLY WW1 ... :-( Can anyone tell me... how much IS WW1? Thanks Chris
    5. Sometimes there is something written on a doc where we are not so clear what the man did, although we have a vague idea. Does anyone know what Rittmeister Paul Klinger, commandant der K.H.Qu beim Gen Kdo. XV bay. Res.Korps did? Was he a liason man?
    6. Thanks Glenn, That gives me some more to go on. I am going to guess he was with his regt at this stage as the bay. Xv: R.K was not in business this early. of course, he could already have been on a staff from day one. Best Chris
    7. Looking through my books, the only major action i find for them is the Nivelle offensive... maybe I am looking in the wrong places... any ideas where else? Thanks Chris
    8. Wow.... I used to think Epp was at the helm for most of the war... that IS an eye opener..... Thanks guys! I guess Klinger was one of those guys who was a witness to historical events, but never really played an active enough part to get a mention.
    9. Hi, good question. the one pictured was found up in Usedom, which is ex DDR. more I cannot say to it.
    10. Hi, Thanks. It seems old freiherr von E. was offdoing other things quite often. I never realised he spent that much time away from the Regt !!
    11. Hi Rick, Thanks :-) Just a note, von Epp was commander, but I have a doc signed von Bothmer Regiments F?hrer 1917, so he must have had temp command at the time. maybe von Epp was wounded? Klinger had the EK1 in May 1917 (Just for info ;-)) thanks Chris
    12. A couple of Questions... When did Graf von Bothmer command the Leib Regt? O have him as Regiments F?hrer in November 1917. Second, and more difficult.... Rittmeister Paul Klinger, commandant der K.H.Qu beim Gen Kdo. XV bay. Res.Korps..... was he a Bavarian or just attached as a liason? Does anyone know anything about him? Thanks Chris
    13. My wifes great uncle was 16 in 45 and pulled in to the Army, also near Dresden. When he and his pimply face colleagues were on the march none other than diehard Sch?rner stopped to speak to their column. He used to say Sch?rner was shocked to see such young boys in uniform and delibrately send them away from the front, the field marschall himself showing the Leutnant ot captain where he should go on the map. Albrecht (the great uncle) had a pair of boots that were falling apart. Sch?rner gave him his own pair of extra boots from the trunk of his car before continuing on (!!!!!). he was so young the Russians just gave him a kick in the pants and sent him home.
    14. There is a great postcard of immelmann with his dog, a fine looking beast named "Tyras".. I no longer have it... but boy.. what a dog...
    15. Yup, small in the bottom right hand corner. But as the doc was printed by the unit in question, it may be specific to that unit. I musgt look see if I can find it...
    16. This thread reminded me of Lt M?llers compass... http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=5077 Very strange that the Germans did not have an issue compass !
    17. I ask because I have or saw (cannot remember, have to look) a wound badge doc with a small line printed at the bottom saying "In case of a higher award this badge must be returned" I found it very unusual.
    18. There are some that are returned to the state, on the death of the recipient or when a higher grade is awarded.... has anyone ever heard of this when someone has been awarded a higher grade of wound badge ???
    19. Here is the URL http://www.memoiredeshommes.sga.defense.gouv.fr/ HOWEVER I have a document to Soldat Charles Henry, 52eme R.I. Killed 31 October 1914... he is not listed :-(
    20. The binos are 1909-1911 stamped, the case was later died black by the Germans.
    21. First is a British compass dated 1916. The name of the british officer and his regt have been scratched out, and "Ltn M?ller 12/23 I.R." written over it.
