Hello all, I've hoped to find an example of this award for some time and recently had some luck in obtaining one locally. I'm hoping a member here has access to the books by Zelosko as I would dearly love to be able to research the recipient. My understanding is that this is a type 7 award. The reverse of the medal is named to: SUMM As it seems an uncommon surname, I'm hoping he's easily researched. If anyone knows a good source for a length of ribbon (preferably original - could be a small length just for display) I'd be grateful to hear your suggestions. Thanks in advance for any help! Cheers/MfG, Adam

Thank you for confirming my suspicions. I'll have her send it back to whence it came.

Paul, Thanks for your reply and for the information. Much appreciated. This came in to my mother's shop. No idea of the provenance. I'll see if I can arrange some better photos for review, although I'd wager it's not right and one of the many reproductions floating around. Cheers, Adam

Hello all, It's been awhile since I was on here, out of the game these days for the most part. I've attached photos of what I understand to be an Imperial Russian badge. I'm guessing this is a regimental badge or similar, but despite searching on here and online generally I've been unsuccessful at finding an exact match. Can anyone help? I am out of my depths here, but am aware that these are a real minefield as far as reproductions go. I don't know what kind of a chance this one has at being genuine...personally I don't get the "warm fuzzies". These are the only photos I have at the moment...I can probably get some more. I'd appreciate any help you may be able to offer. Cheers, Adam

DCM gratuity....
AJHaslett replied to The Monkey God's topic in Great Britain: Orders, Gallantry, Campaign Medals
Another factor that influenced the gratuity was rank, at least during Victorian times. I have a VR DCM, and while researching noted that in the unit records the Sgts awarded the DCM, had a higher gratuity that that of the Corporals, and these again higher than those to privates. No expert on the subject, merely an observation. Cheers, Adam -

Very nice examples. I really like these myself. I have a few examples. Once I get my photography capability set up, and have a bit of time, I plan to photograph some of my collection so should, hopefully, have some to share. Cheers, Adam -
WW1 Canadian KIA.
AJHaslett replied to Chris Boonzaier's topic in Great Britain: Orders, Gallantry, Campaign Medals
Hi Chris, I remember when you bought this set. Very nice. If the Halifax Rifles badge was also his, you may be looking for a man with WWI and WWII and possibly militia service as well as it's a WWII vintage item. This would entail ordering his WWI and post WWI files separately. Cheers, Adam -

While the next to most recent batch of CDs were, I agree...horrendous, I have the great pleasure to report that the most recent examples are of considerably better manufacture. As I understand the Canadian Mint is now making these vice a private contract...(responsible for the abominations of the SSM and the 125) NEW SSMs are, apparently much nicer looking than the original "strikings/castings" As an aside I would caution collectors with regards to the aforementioned seller as he has been involved in well-documented sales of altered medals. It's very similar to an Ecuadorean coat of arms that I will post when I get home. It's not exact but it's the closest I've seen to my badge. Have to remember that this is probably 1920s/30s so current national emblems may differ from that period. I agree, must be naval aviation of some sort judging by the symbology.

Hello everyone, I used to think I was pretty adept at identifying bits of militaria...until I picked up this badge. I acquired it with a small accumulation of WWI and WWII British and Canadian cap badges (all of which are genuine period pieces). However, this certainly isn't British or Commonwealth... It appears to be a pilot or aircrew badge of some sort, but I have not been able to determine its country of origin. Most people that have seen in feel that it is most likely Pre-WWII South American, quite possibly from Ecuador. It's made of what I feel is gilded bronze. The insignia at the bottom is enamelled in different colours. There are no visible rivets, but the badge is made of 3 parts: the wreath portion, the bottom insignia and the wings. The wreath portion measures approx 45 mm x 35 mm and the wings are about 55mm. The top of the badge features a crossed propeller and anchor (naval aviation?), the centre is a pair of wings with a clenched fist in the middle, the enamelled insignia at the bottom appears to be a bird of some sort soaring over a mountainous landscape with a river in the foreground. At a guess, the design and construction possibly hints at some Germanic influence: Oakleaf wreath in the oval shape... but from there similarities cease. There is no maker's mark, or writing on the badge of any kind. The insignia suggest a military connection to me...however, I have not found a match anywhere I have looked online and I have scoured every site I could find about both civil and military aviation insignia. It's extremely well made, and shows some wear. Definitely not something made too recently. I've attached photos of the obverse and reverse...I am confident that at least one of you can tell me what this badge is, where it's from and what its significance is! I look forward to your replies. Cheers, Adam

Help with 1914-15 star
AJHaslett replied to Ed Maroli's topic in Great Britain: Orders, Gallantry, Campaign Medals
You should be able to find some mention of him in the London Gazette. Searching their archive can be frustrating and tedious but usually pays off... That's probably the best place to start. With some initial details you can likely determine whether or not you wish to dig deeper and get a service file. Cheers, Adam -
INAUGURAL ARMY/AFL AWARD

Interesting gong. Incidentally, it's box Lacrosse (vs the girly field variety) that is our national summer sport. Hockey is Canada's national winter sport. -

A nice long service group. In case you are interested: Prichett received the CD in 1961 serving with the Royal Canadian Engineers. Cheers Adam -
A Few "Indian" Medals
AJHaslett replied to leigh kitchen's topic in Great Britain: Orders, Gallantry, Campaign Medals
Leigh, I really like that old ribbon too! Just something about it, isn't there. I would not be worried about the naming. I know I have seen a "," on medal naming, in fact I think not altogether uncommon on some issues but will have to rack my brain to remember where these are encountered. Not too standard for WWI issues though I would agree. -
There are a plethora of these Temperance Medals. David Harris published a book on them some years back. I am not sure if it is still in print or how widely available but you can probably track down a copy if this is an area of interest. They are rather interesting, and even named and researchable in some instances.

Soviet Navy Cap insignia - ID help?
AJHaslett replied to AJHaslett's topic in USSR: Soviet: Other Militaria
Hi Ritchie, Indeed...I fondly look back on the days when we feared Red Hordes pouring thru the Fulda Gap, rather than Islamists flying airplanes into buildings and attacking people with cowardly IEDs and other such gutless things. At least then we knew who was who in the zoo. -

A "sheesh" and a deleted post. Interesting Don't worry you won't hurt my feelings lads...so don't feel you have to moderate your input. Takc, oh I am sure you are...I've just known Rick a lot longer, don't take it too personally. Had a few bad dealings with people from the East and I guess it's hard to wipe the slate clean sometimes, so to speak. Apologies if you felt offended.
