    1. Enzo, My 1916 Ranglisten indicates that there are approximately 10 possible candidates (all Reserve Officers) to match your 1st Class bravery medal. Regards, Ian

    6. Christian, Thank you for the correction. regards, ian
    7. David, Unfortuantely my reference material does not go back far enough to cover your interest, but I did find this little bit: 1870 - 1876 Oberst and in command of HR 8. He handed over command of HR 8 to Oberst Friedrich Binder Not much, but I guess everhy little bit helps. Regards, Ian
    8. Sharon, The photo shows your great grandfather as a Korporal serving in an aviation unit (high probability he was not a pilot). The ribbon is fror the Karltruppenkreuz (Carl Troop Cross). If you have his full name, birth date and place of birth you may well be able to find information on him from the Kriegsarchiv in Vienna. Regards, Ian
    9. Glenn, I wasn't even close with my assunption. Many thanks. Ian
    10. Originally I thought the Oberst was Robert Maria Clemens Philipp Joseph Herzog von Württemberg, from Dragon Regiment 'Erzherzog Albrecht ' Nr. 9, but now I am not so certain. Notice the Order of the Golden Fleece visible and the Military Merit Cross with war decoration, and the EK 1. Any one able to shed some light on who he is? Regards, Ian
    11. Valter, Basically a commission (Kommission Oberst Heller) was set up after the war to review and recommend awards of the MMThO and Bravery Medals (Gold and Large Silver) to deserving Officers and soldiers who had not had there awards processed prior to the cessation of hostilities in 1918. There were some 10 awards of the MMThO made between 1920 and 1931 and approx 162 GTM in the same period to Officers. Many awards of the GTM and Large STM were made to soldiers at the same time. The awardss would have been from stock held and the remainder would have been from orders placed with those remaining medal manufactures still in business (Roth of Vienna etc). These Orders and Decorations were made from the original dies. GTM: Goldenen Tapferkeitsmedaille MMThO: Militär Maria Theresien Orden Those with more knowledge than me will hopefully correct or add to my comments.
    12. Sadly taken from us, but he will not soon be fogotten. A personal thankyou for all the assistance and help you provided not only to me, but the many. many forum members. God in his wisdom took you from us: go in peace.
    13. Hi, I have located an entries for: Rudolf MUNTJAN born 1892. He entered service in the k.u.k. Kriegsmarine 05 Jul 1913 and was promoted to the rank of Seefahnriche in der Reserve 01 May 1917. Last know service was aboard SMS Temes. Eugen MUNTEAN born 1878. He entered service in the k.u.k. Kriegsmarine 27 Jan 1901 and was promoted to the rank of Marineartillerie-Oberingenieure 2. Klasse 01 Nov 1917. Eugen MUNTEAN was a Beamte and was eqivalant to a Korvettankapitan or Major. Last know service was in the Marinemunitionsestablisment. These are the only two entries I was able to locate. Regards, Ian
    14. Glenn, Thank you for the name. Regards, Ian
    15. I need help to id this recently obtained postcard picture of an Oberst please.
    16. Rick, Fantastic! Thank you. The picture I posted is a slightly resized postcard. I basically cut the top quarter off (a mere plain background) Post stamped 13.8.16.11-12. S.B. 9. Komp.111./ L.I.R. 6 Regards, Ian
    17. Gentlemen, The name of this Bavarian General has escaped me to date, and that is mostly due to the fact that i have absolute zero on the Bavarian Army. I would be most grateful for any assistance in helping to identify my General. Regards, Ian
    18. Rick, Outstanding! Oberstleutnant Johann Freiherr von Odelga-Zakany. Promoted 01 Feb 1918. At a brisk 13 C it is the exact opposite here; roll on summer!.
    19. One more of my 'I can't make out his scribble' photos. I suspect this Oberstleutnant is from IR 4 as the background (although very blurry) appears to be similar if not the same as the previous photo I posted of Oberstleutnant Hugo Nedjela.
    20. Rick, Glenn J and Wraith 42 Thank you for your efforts in trying to help identify my mystery Oberstabartz, however it would appear he shall remain a mystery for the time being. Regards, Ian
    21. Rick, Oberstabarzte 1. Klasse Alois LODE, is listed on page 243 of the 1918 'Jahrbuch fur Militararzte' under Konsilarzte. Dr Lobe is not listed in the 1914 Jahrbuch for Militararzte.
    22. I think we can probably rule Robert Doerr out of the the time being because the Dr we are searching for does not appear to have been awarded the FJO-R, whilst Robert Doerr has. Whilst this may appear unusual, in fact there are several listings in my copy of the 1918 'Jahrbuch fur das Militarartze' where Drs. have been awarded the FJO-OK without having a listing of the FJO-RK. As an example: Generale-Stabarzte Johann Frisch has the FJO-OK, but no FJO-RK and the same for Oberstabarzte 1 class Heinrich Rump. In the mean time I am slowly working my way through my copy of the 1918 Militararzte Jahrbuch trying to match the Bavarian Bavarian St Michael Order with likely suspects, but so far no luck. Of course my Dr may have been out of the Army by then and that is why he is proving elusive. Regards, Ian
    23. Eric, Thank you for the additional information on the cross - Bavarian Royal Merit Order of Saint Michael, I don't have any thing on Imperial German (or States) awards for that period.
    24. Glenn, I would never have made the connection between the photo I posted and your photo The extra information on his service career is most welcome. Regards, Ian
