I would venture the opinion that if is not Wilhelm Graf von Hohenau it is a (very) near relative, but I am inclined to say that is Wilhelm.

Let me start by saying I don't have my reference books with me to be able to provide you with a more accurate description. However, I can say that your Great Grandfather is Gendarmerie (Hungarian term is Magyar Kiralyi Csendor; but it means the same thing). He is wearing a typical Gendarmerie uniform, and he is displaying the chevrons for a long serving NCO. The rank displayed on his collar is for a Sergeant (Zugsfuhrer). The first medal he is wearing is the 1908 Jubilee Medal...not certain on the other one. As a Senior NCO he would in all probability have been in charge of a small Gendarmerie detachment (Police station) in a village, somewhere in the Hungarian half of the Monarchy. I have also been 'watching' this since it first appeared on eBay. I didn't like it from the moment I laid eyes on and will be interested to see what it sells for. Someone is going to be very disappointed. Notice on the bottom lefthand side the 'Franz' has been doubled up on. "A fool and their money are soon parted' comes to mind.

G'day Tony, I have trawled through the 1918 k.u.k. Ranglisten and the 1918 k.k. Ranglisten and have been unable to find anyone who even comes close to SOLDORICH or any reasonable facsimiles. I do not have access to the k.u. Honved ranglist, and it is very possible he would be found within. I n the mean time the search continues, but I very much appreciate your input. Regards, Ian

There are refence books in German readily available. I have several and luckily for me they are not difficult to translate. The shoulder boards are for an officer of the a 'kaiserschutzen' regiment, Emperor Karl period (late 1916/early 1917 until 1918). The two cap badges you have are for a 'higher' level matrosen (sailor) (FJ1 = Franz Josef 1) and the other cap badge (K = Karl) goes along with your 'Stabsmaschinwaerter' items.

Bilol, The Shoulder boards belong to a 'Stabsmaschinwaerter' - summer uniform. The propellor and crown are for the left sleeve of either an 'Oberstabsmaschinwaerter', 'Stabsmaschinwaerter' or a 'Maschinwaerter'- winter uniform. I have a very similar set, but mine are for a 'Maschinwaerter' A very, very nice set of k.u.k. kriegsmarine uniform accoutrements. Regards, Ian

Thye Gold medal is truly a lovely looking medal. The silver is not quite as stunning, but very nice never the less.

I am a bit late to this conversation, but I have been searchi8ng for a compatible ribbon that might fit the profile of the ribbon bar. Perhaps it is the 'Tiroler Landesverteidigungs - Jubileelaumsmedaille 1859 - 1909' To me, when I look at the ribbons on the bar it makes sense, but I am no expert.

The young Dragoner is a Korporal. His medals and the badge on his right indicates this. Medals are the Bronze Tapeferkeitsmedaille, Eisernes Verdienstkreuz and Karltruppenkreuz. As for the 'qualification' badge it is way to blurred to tell, but I suspect it could be the 'Reiterauszeichnung' or a 'Schützen' badge.

Greg, I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but they look 100% to me. Your pair are exactly the same as the two in my collection. Regards, Ian

Gentlemen, This one has me stumped. The photo contains the image of GO Wenzel Wurm, FML Alois Podhajsky and, behing FML Podhajsky's shoulder, Oberst?? Written on the reverse of the photo is Wurm, Podhajsky and what appears to me to be ‘Lehmann…’ (last few letters are unreadable). I cannot find an Oberst Lehmann in the 1917 or 1918 ranglists. There is however, a General der Kavallerie Lehamann, but he is not the man in the photo. Am I reading the name ‘Lehmann' correctly, or am I on the wrong path?
