Eric has a good point and looking at it again the crown is a bit angled. I'd suggest you ask for a closeup of the back and an angled shot of the inside edges.

I thought the oilcloth cap was discontinued before the War and a Kokarde or cross on the state Wappen was used.

From the holes it looks like it might have been nailed to something. Maybe a patriotic box or plaque? What are the dimensions?

Great group Could you post the D?ppel and Alsen docs? I've never seen either one.

From what I understand they served no practical purpose other than to make space for the manufacturer's name and date of manufacture. They do add interest, though.
