    1. Gentlemen, I had a contact in Pakistan who, once in a while, would show me the occasional Arab medal, and then other stuff much of which was not my field of interest. Over the years I have built a collection of Bahawalpur singles including miniatures and when he offered the groups in 2014 and 2016 I could not resist them. Regards, Owain
    2. Gentlemen, Whilst my main focus is upon the awards of the various Arab nations, whilst I lived in the Middle East I occasionally purchased RAOB jewels as being interesting tokens of British expats living and serving in the Middle East. I suspect that may were owned by ex-service personnel serving in one of the many British bases (usually RAF) now long since closed. Any that remain are where ex-service men are employed. During the current Covid-19 lock down I have had the opportunity to have a tidy up and it now appears that I have a nice representative collection. The quality varies from the excellent to not so good, but the variety of designs are most attractive. Kind regards, Owain Gentlemen, I attach further images this time of Arabian Knights - originally based in Aden and now I believe in Saudi Arabia. Also from Egypt. Owain Gentlemen, Now Iraq, Jordan & Palestine. Also Lawrence of Arabia (I think based in Saudi Arabia) and Scorpion - not sure where this was based. Owain Gentlemen, And finally Lybia and Oman. Regards, Owain

    4. Gentlemen, The next group also came loose from Pakistan - I have yet to get these medals mounted and of course the correct ribbons are not easily available. The medals are as follows: Military Efficiency Decoration 2nd Class - 7150 L. Mohd Nawaz S. Inf. Good Conduct Medal - 135 Lance Naik Mohammed Nawaz Centenary Medal - 7150 L. Mohd Nawaz Khan. 1st Bahr. Sad. Inf. Volunteer Corps Medal - 127 Lance Mohammed Nawaz. Note the change of numbers. Owain Gentlemen, Finally a British group with a Bahawalpur medal - from a UK auction. The medals are: War Medal - J. A. Bailey. Bd. Mastr. 105 Infy. Victory Medal - J. A. Bailey. Bd. Mastr. 105 Infy. Delhi Durbar 1911 - J. A. Bailey Band Master 28th Punjabis Installation Medal 1924 (Silver) - No.1 Band Master Mr. J. A. Bailey Bailey's Great War Medal Card notes his rank as Sub:Cond (Band Master) and his address is, 'Musical Director Bahawalpur State Band, Bahawalpur, Punjab'. Regards, Owain
    5. Gentlemen, Further to James's thread on the medals of Bahawalpur I am pleased to display some groups I have the good fortune to acquire. The first group came loose from Pakistan and is lucky to survive as a group. I have them cleaned and mounted with a view to maintaining their integrity. As and when I can obtain the correct ribbons the neutral brown/red ribbons will be replaced. The medals are as follows: Long Service Medal - 17 Subedar Gulam Mohd Armourer 1st B.S.I. Centenary Medal - 2nd Lt. Ghulam Mohd. Armourer War Medal - 2913 Sepoy Ghulam Mohd Khan. 5 - Lt. Inf. India General Service Medal - 2193 Sepoy Ghulam Mohd Khan. 5/Infy. More to follow, Owain
    6. Not my collecting focus but great photos - thanks for sharing, Owain
    7. JapanX, Your point concerning the Danlio 1st Class is well made. Of course the group could be the result of a bored tailor who put them together to 'amuse' but I don't think so. As you say, curiouser and curiouser. Owain
    8. Gentlemen Good to read your various responses, and yes, perhaps there is an element of 'social climber' (or 'Walt') with the group. The mix coupled with the strange ordering and a repeat of the Orthodox Crusaders award, plus of course the Dungarpur medal (which as far as I am aware was an unknown until I obtained the group), points to someone who did not feel constrained by the proper etiquette of wearing awards but was well enough connected to be a recipient of the awards and wealthy enough to have such a group of very high quality miniatures put together and presumably with a view to wearing them. At least the Athos Cross gives a semblance of a cut off date. Sadly there is no label on the reverse. Despite all of this I think that the 35 Jubilee and 37 Coronation were genuinely awarded - as to the others I doubt if any of them are in the LG - I cannot see the recipient even trying to get permission to wear them. As both the 35 and 37 awards were close in chronological terms there is a large overlap in recipients and to date I am unaware of a list of recipients who received both - such a list would, at least, provide a more practical means of narrowing the field of possible candidates. Ah well, it is not urgent and will remain in my to do box for a while yet. Owain P.S. Thank you JapanX for sharing your miniature groups - really nice groups.
    9. Paul, I read the Privy Purse Roll - interesting reading but no obvious candidates - the list includes one 'X' - HIH The Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna of Russia on the King's Personal Friends List - she was his 1st cousin and sister to Tsar Nicholas II - she died in 1960 - so not her! I also tried the Advisers to Government Departments Rolls - again interesting reading but no obvious candidates. Owain
    10. Paul, Thanks for this suggestion. I had already looked at the BRC roll for the 1935 Jubilee Medal and there were no obvious candidates. Ditto Miscellaneous Individuals list - only 8 persons. I suspect the answer may lie in one of the following: Privy Purse - unlikely as these contain Royals, Royal Household Staff, Foreign Diplomats. Civil Service - 75 Rolls Advisers to Government Departments - 28 Rolls - best bet?? Ho hum....... Owain
    11. Mike, Hugh, I don't think he is a member of the Royal Household - junior staff would not have accumulated such an array and senior staff or even Royal would not have worn the Dungarpur Indian Princely state medal or indeed the Athos Cross as they would not have been allowed to wear them. Even 'restricted permission to wear' would not have resulted in such a group. Perhaps there may have been a British neck badge (CBE? CVO? CMG? CB?, CH? OM?) worn separately but we'll never know unless we can ID the group's owner. Regards, Owain
    12. Thanks Paul. I've also looked up the LG for awards of Orange Nassau 1920 to 1970. The bulk of the Civil Commanders are gazetted LG 30 January 1948 (47 of which 24 have post nominals) & 29 August 1950 (8 of which 3 have post nominals) but both lists are for WW2 related services, and not one name seems even vaguely Balkan or Slavic thus I suspect our man is not amongst them. OPwain
    13. Gentlemen, Some time ago I obtained this most attractive group of thirteen miniatures - all of which are extremely well made and most are of gold. To date, despite best efforts with colleagues, I have been unable to identify the owner of the group or even draw up a shortlist. The group consists of the following: 1. United Kingdom - 1935 GVR Jubilee Medal - 85,000 approx issued 2. United Kingdom - 1937 GVIR Coronation Medal - 90,000 approx issued 3. Dungarpur State – 1943 Silver Jubilee Medal - Checked 1935 Jubilee Roll - all recipients have Indian names 4. Belgium - Order of the Crown – Officer, 4th Class 5. France - Legion of Honour – Knight, 5th Class 6. Montenegro - Order of Danilo – Grand Cordon, 1st Class - Obsolete after Great War - Checked LG for WW1 awards - not many and all military 7. Greece - Order of the Orthodox Crusaders of the Patriarchy of Jerusalem - 1st Class Sash Badge 8. Netherlands - Order of Orange Nassau – Commander, 3rd Class 9. Russia - Order of St. Anne – Knight, 5th Class (Obsolete after Great War?) 10. Patriarchate of Constantinople - Mount Athos Millenium Memorial Cross 1963 11. Greece - Order of the Orthodox Crusaders of the Patriarchy of Jerusalem – Commander’s Neck Badge 12. France - Palmes Academiques - 1st Class (pre-1955) 13. Russia - Order of St. Stanislas - 5th Class (Obsolete after Great War?) So to recap: Lead medals - 35 & 37 commemoratives Format - very British Very well made and gold (expensive) No British orders No military medals - thus no military service in WW2 To heavy mix of 'orthodox' awards - Constantinople, Greece, Montenegro, Russia Dungarpur medal - 35 Jubilee Roll for Dungarpur only has 15 Indian names - Rajputna Roll (Dungarpur within Rajputna) has 76 names - 25 British - all military or with honours. Time frame - end of WW1 (if Montenegro & Russian awards are pre-overthrow of regimes) to 1963 (Athos Cross) So I believe I am looking for a well to do UK national (possibly an emigre who took on nationality) who is a civilian, with some manner of 'orthodox' connections - an academic, a cleric, or some manner of political person. Without having to name spot by accessing the whole of the 35 and 37 medal rolls - any ideas, suggestions, thoughts? With thanks in advance, Owain
    14. Rusty, The E-bay vendor is 'larsb001' who is based in Denmark, however the miniatures are no longer for sale - possibly sold. The vendor has a 100% positive record and usually has a some very nice high quality pieces for sale - possibly selling some of his collection. I had considered bidding but prevarication and the fact that I already have a miniature allowed them to pass me by! Regards, Owain
    15. Rusty, Further to your detailed research I attach below images of two Ismail miniatures currently for sale on E-Bay - no ribbons and as far as I can see no maker's marks. Kind regards, Owain
    16. Dear Boris, A long overdue thank you for these links - both interesting but no closer to discovering why Menelik received the Spanish Order of the Red Cross. I think I will try and finish my article based on what information I have. If I wait until I have everything it will never see publication! Kind regards, Owain Boris, I have done another check to see if I have made a mistake on identifying the star but I am convinced it is the Spanish Order of the Red Cross - see image below. Kind regards, Owain
    17. Richard, No problem - many thanks - good to see the pictures. Regards, Owain
    18. Hi, I have been advised by dealers in Sana'a that many of these counterstamps are modern and have been added to deceive so I would suggest that unless the coins are very cheap or you have some provenance to steer clear of such coins. Kind regards, Owain
    19. Gentlemen, After some eight years, retirement to UK and lockdown I have completed the group. My thanks to you all for your assistance. Enjoy, Owain
    20. Gentlemen, Some eight years on - retired to UK a year ago and now in lockdown. What to do? Ferret through my Ethiopia drawer and at long last complete the group. Enjoy, Owain
    21. Richard, Happy to help. If the badge is for sale I would be interested. Kind regards, Owain P.S. Can you post a picture of its reverse?
    22. Richard, The top medal is a sports medals for the Directorate of Youth and Sports Eastern District - possibly Egypt or Syria or Iraq. The middle medal is the 15th Anniversary of the UAE. The lower badge a is a 20th anniversary commemorative state security badge from South Yemen. Kind regards, Owain
    23. Rusty, As always your attention to detail is amazing - you should use your work to get a PhD on this topic. One small addition - from the picture of the shop front of L Kramer & Co., the Arabic gives his first name as Leon. Regards, Owain
    24. Gentlemen, Further to Chris's comments I detail below the 'medallic' contents of the book. I have also noted: Type, Date of Institution, Classes and added, where appropriate, a comment. It is indeed a comprehensive book and the author is to be congratulated on this ground breaking achievement. I would though note the following constructive observations: It is not bilingual - perhaps in the future a bilingual second edition could be considered. There are very few images of the reverse of the awards - even if blank they should be included. There is a mixing of State and unofficial awards (including sports medals) - a better segregation of awards is recommended. However notwithstanding these observations I commend the book to any collector of Arab awards. Owain Syria – Orders 1. Order of Omayyad, 1935, Three Classes (1-3) 2.
