    5. Hi All, This is an interesting new Polish group I just bought, consisting of the following: Order Polonia Restituta 5th Class Merit Cross 1st Class Merit Cross 2nd Class Medal for Merit in Defense of the Country in Silver Medal for Merit in Defense of the Country in Bronze 30 Years of People's Poland Commemorative Medal 40 Years of People's Poland Commemorative Medal 10 Years of People's Poland Commemorative Medal Decoration for Merit in Construction The ID card seems to indicate he was director of the Vice-Prime Minister's cabinet or some similar position (that was my best translation of online translators ). Scans of the documents coming up in the next few posts. Any help translating or additional info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, -Alex
    6. Thanks JC! I shall certainly post, if I end up with it at all. The language barriers to get this particular one may prove rather difficult. In the meantime, I shall hope and pray the deal works out! -Alex
    7. Are these medals commonly faked? And are the fakes convincing? If I have reason to feel confident enough about their general authenticity there may be one coming my way soon! Thanks, -Alex
    8. Interesting! I didn't read the fine print there. Is research even possible on the Order for Personal Courage?
    9. Thanks for the pictures! I recognize these from ebay. They are UGLY indeed! When fake red stars were first brought up I thought a faker might have finally made one that could easily pass as authentic. Thankfully, that hasn't happened yet...but it is only a matter of time -Alex
    10. Are these faked Red Stars obvious, or are they good enough to pass as original? I've seen tons with the original s/n removed an new ones engraved, but have they really gone so far as to make the whole thing from scratch? Could you please post examples of such, if you have seen them? Thanks! -Alex
    11. That is a fascinating story! Thanks for sharing I recall something similar involving a group of French pilots who flew beside the Soviets. I don't remember if it was on the forum or not, but I'm pretty sure it was in the documentary series The Unknown War (an amazing, if somewhat propagandized account of events). There was even footage of an award ceremony! -Alex
    12. Woops, sorry! I thought it might not have been right. I haven't been able to find any good pictures of the truckloads of veterans that rode by the review stand, or many other really good pictures, for that matter. Has anyone else found some? Thanks, -Alex
    13. Congratulations Ilja, that is correct! Apparently there are several of these graveyards around Chernobyl, though this is the only one I have found. This link has some more photos of the site: http://englishrussia.com/?p=2343. And here is a picture of a helicopter during the cleanup operation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Chernoby..._operation.JPEG. It probably ended up in this graveyard. OK, Ilja, your turn now! :jumping:
    14. OK, I'll give some hints. I'm sorry, I'm not very good at coming up with quiz questions. So far they have been either too easy, too hard, or too far fetched, and I'm no good with making clues either. Ay ay ay! Anyway, here is a start: 1. This "exhibition show" was completely unplanned. 2. You would not want to try flying those helicopters. They aren't going anywhere, and you would probably get sick trying. -Alex
    15. OK, sorry for the delay. I hope this isn't too easy or hard, and that it hasn't been asked or posted before. What and where is this?
    16. 1. Il-80 Maxdome. This particular one has the civilian code RA-86149 2. Il-86 3. to carry the Russian president and other high-ranking government officials to safety in the event of a nuclear war. 4. summer, 1985 5. 4 6/7. ???? I couldn't find anything on recent modernization. 8. 3 -Alex
    17. I agree, the reverse does look a little strange. I don't actually have an ORS of this variation to compare, but below is a picture from Soviet-screwbacks.com. The serial number is not in the same style.
    18. Interesting pieces! I've seen those photos of the bibs in use before and I always wondered about them. Who in particular were they issued to? It looks like machine-gunners and flamethrower crews from the picture, but was that it? When did the RKKA stop using them? Thanks! -Alex
    19. That type of stroke would imply that it was supposed to be a 9, no? If it was "applied last and on top" then that would mean the 2 was underneath.
