    1. Does anyone know where I could find the list of Kutuzov 1st Class recipients? With serial number, Ukaz, and rank, if possible. I think there was one in the two-volume Soviet Orders and Medals book, but that's currently packed in storage and I cannot access it. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks Dave
    2. I once had a Ushakov and Nakhimov medal group and sold it to another collector. Later, it turned out that the medals were both original, but the document was fake. I offered the buyer the $900 he paid me for it to buy the group back, but for some reason, he refused....
    3. My g-g-g-g-grandfather was a Danish sea captain who was awarded the St Helena Medal. I know my mom's cousins still had it, along with the document, plus the transmittal letters from the embassy that came with it into the 1980s, but I believe they were destroyed when their house in Kansas was flooded. A shame...
    4. Nick: Thanks! It is a very curious group...much of why I bought it! Wish we knew what the story was! Dave
    5. Nick Thank you so much for your help! Since these are nothing I collect, do you have any idea what a group like this might be worth? Thanks again- Dave
    6. And the reverse. Any thoughts/opinions are MUCH appreciated (I am well out of my comfort zone of knowing what I have here!)
    7. All: Just picked up this beautiful little bar today at a show, partially because I was very curious about it. The first three awards are Bulgarian, I believe, then the last one, Imperial Russian. I've owned one other of the latter medals and it had been awarded to a UK Royal Navy sailor...but that was a few years back and I got lucky. Anyone have any thoughts about this bar, and furthermore, would it have belonged to an officer? Enlisted? And what are the medals? Thanks! Dave
    8. All: Doing a bit of investigatory research for a couple projects, and I was wondering if anyone happened to have any orders or medals that fell in any of the following number ranges. If they are researched, all the better! If not, that's perfectly okay as well. I am _NOT_ looking to buy these awards, I am simply interested in them to fill in blanks in a couple databases. Patriotic War 1st Class (these fall into the May/June 1945 awards, possibly for Berlin) 2475XX Patriotic War 2nd Class (likewise, right at the end of fighting in Europe awards) 5572XX Red Star (I believe some of these may fall into long service awards and/or end of War awards) 3664XX and 15539XX (two separate ranges) Glory 3rd Class 3879XX Medal "For Valor" 20757XX Medal "For Military Merit" (these should be long service) 25510XX What I'm looking for is a reply of something like: "I own OGPW 2nd Class number 557249 and it was awarded to Lieutenant Ivan Federenko on 12 May 1945 by the 1st Ukrainian Front" or "I own Red Star 366444 and it hasn't been possible to research it". Include it here in the thread, or send me a PM. Thanks in advance for any help! Dave
    9. Very nice! Posthumous awards were also my niche "back in the day". I had several OGPWs, both 1st and 2nd class awards. And one posthumous Red Banner. I've come across several posthumous Soviet awards to US Navy personnel doing research for my book. Quite interesting... Dave
    10. No idea...so far I only have the information from our State Department archives. Nothing from the Soviet side at this time...
    11. I'm tracking down all of the Soviet awards to US Navy personnel in WW2. I'm in touch with either the actual recipients or families of about half of the 205 awards given out in 1944 and 1945 so far. My goal is to make contact with the families of every recipient. Not sure if that will happen, but I am doing my best to make it so. The book will include bios of all of the recipients as well as photographs of their awards and documents (both US and Soviet). That's why I'm trying to figure out where Sissler's award went off to...
    12. Just a bump back up to the top. Still trying to figure out who got Sissler's award so I can get photos of it for my book (I cannot use them unless I have written authorization, sadly). Please PM me if you know. Thank you for the help! Dave
    13. Maybe I'm off but I believe the serial numbers on both the Red Star and OGPW2 were replaced. The group is nice, but as far as I'm concerned, it's made up of only the two For Valor medals... Dave
    14. I have an award I need researched by s/n. Who is doing research nowadays? Can someone PM me? Thanks!
    15. Yep, I just walked in. In fact, it's the door on the small building to the right in your photo. No one said I couldn't...
    16. When I was in Padolsk in 1996, the prices for research available were listed in the front froom. It was nothing compared to what I was actually paying. But that was many years ago and so much has changed since then...
    17. I'm looking for someone with this book to see if there's a photo of a particular medal in there. Should be a quick look up. Thanks in advance for any help! Dave
    18. LOL! Nice! The 640U sounds like one of my old ones...I just found one on amazon for $60, so I'm going to jump on it. Here's a vivid example of the failure of my canon LiDE 210. The smaller image in the lower corner was done with an early Epson, whereas the HORRIBLE image was done this morning on the Canon...
    19. Chris - that's gorgeous! Which one of the perfections do you have? Thanks! Dave
    20. I've gone through four scanners in the last 15 years and frankly, the earliest ones were the best. I had two of them back-to-back that were able to focus out to 3/4"...pretty amazing for a flat bed scanner. However, they were either broken or lost during moves (flatbed scanner glass and military movers don't mix...) and I am now out of scanners - and I need one. I was looking online yesterday and found the Canon LiDE models, and discovered we had an unused one (a 210) at work, so I borrowed it for a test drive. Playing with it this morning...I'm glad I didn't buy one!!! You can see from the scan of the document below that unless the item is 100% on the scanner face, it's blurred out...it might have 1/16" focal range. I'm sure there are good scanners out there for medals, patches, wings and the like, but I don't have the means or time to buy a bunch of them and try them out. What have you found to work well? Thank you in advance for advice! Dave
    21. Does anyone know where Sissler's award and document ended up? No need to post on here, you can PM me if you know. I'd like to get some better pics (or permission to use these) for my upcoming book on Soviet awards to US Navy personnel. Thanks! Dave
