    1. If you are researching a USAAF plane, you are most likely going to find your information in a missing air crew report (MACR), and I can help you with your project. Please post the relevant data here or by private message. Cheers, Mike
    2. .......and small world that it is, the mountains above Soell is also the location of the suicide by hypothermia of our favorite Third Reich Grail Seeker, SS Obersturmfuehrer Otto Rahn (1904-38)! The very church in discussion is where his body was taken after discovery and is purported to contain the particulars of his demise. I will be there in a few weeks to see for myself. Apologies to Chris for hijacking the thread, but I couldn't let the opportunity pass. Does anyone know the source of this image? Cheers, Mike
    3. Ding, Ding, Ding.....we have a winner! The Polizei Bergfuehrerabzeichen doc should be back from the hospital in a few weeks and I'll post some before and afters, if anyone is interested. It is part of a comprehensive group. Ernst, I know I've said it before, but your site is awesome!
    4. Chris, You touched on the point that occurred to me, why bother. As much as I personally like the medal, an original that is, I can't imagine demand would justify the effort. The same "collector" has another currently available on ebay, so perhaps he is the metallurgist as well!
    5. Thanks guys. This should be proof enough. I bought this off eBay from a "collector" in Austria who offered a pic of what appeared to be an original. This badge that was delivered is certainily not the same one offered on eBay. It was only 35 Euro and it is going back if my concerns are valid. If anyone has an original they are parting with, let me know. Thanks for the input.
    6. Well, I thought I had a good one, but I think I got the Ol' Bait and Switch. Cast repro, right?
    7. Rick, Thanks for confirming my suspicions, although looking at his signature, it is still difficult to see how that spells "DALUEGE". No, this is not some pedestrian commission, but something much nicer The original doc is being restored and I only had the crappy scan I posted. The doc belongs to the man pictured on the right. Look closely for the clue. More later, and thanks again.
    8. Wow, I really like how this thread has expanded, although it makes my initial thoughts seem pedestrain. Basically, I initiated this thread to ask for comment on the SEHOs on the eMedals site in terms of quality of manufacture, period of manufacture, and suitability of price. I'm not certain the last question is appropriate in this forum, so please strike if not. I am of the mind to acquire one so comments are appreciated. Rod, great piece! Schie, yes, 10 and 4, thanks. Keep Posting
    9. Two questions that I hope aren't too simple. ~The Type II reverse has, for lack of a better term, a line of green shamrocks within a blue enameled circle. Various examples show the line in the "10 and 2" position while others show more of a "9 and 3" position. Are these acceptable variations? Perhaps jewelers variations? ~Are the true Type II award dates from 1864-1918 or 1864-1938? I have seen both. Sorry for the lack of pictures that might better illustrate my questions and thanks in advance. Mike
    10. Heiko, Terribly sorry to read your news. Fingers crossed for a quick return. Mike
    11. Claudio, I was going to pursue von Mackensen's chain until I read your post. As a big believer in keeping groups "whole", I will bid on some of the many other goodies Thies is offering. Good luck with your quest. Mike
    12. I have the 1979-80 edition and I can scan it for you tomorrow afternoon, if not too late. Just 4.25 tiny pages. Let me know.
    13. Hi Gents, Thanks for the comments and advice. I'll give it another try, then move on. Happy Collecting, M.
    14. Hi, Does Andres Thies sell his catalog stock that is unsold at auction? I have emailed, but I never receive a response. Best, Mike
    15. Chris, Great story. I especially enjoy reading a person's history when I can place a name, a photo, and a location to their exploits. Good luck on the book, and sign me up for a copy. Merry Christmas to all, especially the Pagans, Mike
