Soviet Stuff you don't see everyday
Vatjan replied to Dudeman's topic in USSR: Soviet Orders, Medals & Decorations
This guy sure spent a lot of time cleaning his medal and then spent more time re-engraving the details on it. Veeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyy nice one Dave. Though Mongolian rather than russian, this guy also spent quite some time making his medal good as new again. -

I do not have any examples to show, but I got this cd and was really pleased with it and learned a great deal about these badges. It's a wealth of information for 12 US http://www.geocities.com/huskeradmi/cheka.html Jan

The Sukhbaatar list was compiled with info from Dr Battushig's book, a book on Soviet Generals and hours of Google-ing. For the moment the lists reside at the Mongolian President's office, where sofar not even Dr Battushig has been authorized to study them. Jan

Rick Could you elaborate a little on what you know about these (and other russian/soviet) hallmarks and their respective timeframe. Collectrussia has this info, for one of the Military Valour Orders he has for sale, but it remains a bit vague for me: "Reverse shows "Kokoshnik" hallmark and Moscow sterling silver hallmark (Delta with Kokoshnik and "84"). Also shows Cyrillic maker mark "VKhTM" of Vhutemas Workshop. The hallmarks assure that 1926 is the year of manufacture. The order was instituted in 1926 and coincidentally, old Imperial Russian "Kokoshnik" hallmarks were replaced with the new Soviet ones the same year. " Thanks Jan

This badge comes from the uniform of a Belgian officer of the famous car-canon regiment that fought with the russians in Russia during WWI. I have no idea how/why he got the badge. reverse:

Soviet Strange Order of the Red Banner?
Vatjan replied to order_of_victory's topic in USSR: Soviet Orders, Medals & Decorations
Unfortunately, they are commonly faked. Also, McDaniels' book dates from 1997, a lot has changes since, mostly for worse Jan -

Soviet Strange Order of the Red Banner?
Vatjan replied to order_of_victory's topic in USSR: Soviet Orders, Medals & Decorations
Hi guys, I'm not an expert either, far from it. I know for fact that these orders are extensively faked, and the order above is probably one of these fakes. I took the following pix in the Kutsenko's book on republican orders and from Herfurth's catalogue 4th edition. The details of the above order do not really correspond to these from the books. Sorry for being to be the bearer of bad news. First off, Herfurth -
This order was issued in the year 37 of the Mongolian calender, which started at the Mongolian independance after the fall of the Chinese Qing Dynasty in 1911. 1911 is considered as year 1, hence 37 is actually 1947. So, technically this should/could not be an Uighur inscription OPS. All the other orders and medals are so straightforward, but these OPS's give me a headache Jan

Thanks Rick, corrections made in listing Jan
