Colin - a superb piece - very impressive. Spasm is just doing one of his helmets as a prize for our June competition. The next major comp. after this will be the October Photo Competition - our third. Perhaps you could be tempted to do something as a top prize ? I'm sure you would get good exposure to the public and Members ? Mervyn

I was actually joking when I said 'wasn't everyone called guv !' Yes, the expression was used - but in my day not that often. With regard to saluting officers - we are not automatons and Police only salute their own officers. The army are ignored unless it is a ceremonial occasion. With the Metropolitan Police - and remember we started it all - it was always a pleasure to bump into an officer in the street and give them a salute. Their responses were usually - in this order - surprise, pleasure, confusion and a fumbling whilst they tried to return the salute. Which is why we saluted them................... Whilst on this subject - many Forces follow the Met. and have a short arm movement to bring the palm to the brim of the helmet. We worked out , years ago, that doing military stiff armed salutes is not practical in a crowded place. However, many Forces still do the Army salute - which proves that they are not really in line with our traditions. If that doesn't get a response - then nothing will ? Mervyn

bomb aimers watch
Mervyn Mitton replied to blueman's topic in Great Britain: Militaria: Badges, Uniforms & Equipment
An interesting and well engineered watch - are any members able to help with information ? From the dial it appears to be French. -
There is a post on the Lounge congratulating the Authorities in the US for the conclusion of the terror attack. However, since this is specifically the GMIC's Police Forum, I think it appropriate that we also congratulate our Colleagues involved in this dreadful series of attacks. Particularly - in my view - the Boston Police acted bravely and professionally. I saw they were supported by the State Police - so really all authorities must have been involved. Our deepest sympathies to the families of the Brave Men who sacrificed their lives to defend the public. We, of all people, know how quickly these incidents happen.

Steve - your wonderful post on the development art on the helmet - posted on the Competirion Forum - would also look good on the Lounge. Perhaps a shorter post, but one that could show progress ? Mervyn

Steve - a show and tell would be a great idea - will build-up interest in the comp.. Yes, I did know Chris was joking - I'm trying to make him into a Gentleman - an uphill battle, but, I keep trying. Mervyn

Chris - you're 'sick'................. Steve's art is not to be debased in this way. The SA WW2 helmet was sent to you last week Steve - I hope it is useable. Our next competition will be in June and will be very special. I have allowed for first prize of an engraved dish as 1st prize - and 2nd and 3rd to be the helmet and water bottle. This will be something quite different and I don't think ever done a Forum before. We will submit the winning entries to appropriate newspapers and magazines and will feature your art. I have to submit the plans to Nick and if he agrees will post details soon. Mervyn

Welcome to GMIC Jon. You say you haven't been on for a while - I'm wondering why it hasn't shown-up ? Your post on these medals is interesting - Thames Court is where we used to go since it covered mainly 'H' Div. There was a Court Inspector and a Court Sergeant - he administered the prisoners and the cells. I don't recall a Warrants Sgt. However, Bethnal Green had an admin. office with officers attached for serving Warrants. Mervyn

This presentation flask - made of pewter and shaped to go in a hip pocket - came with the medals. Named and with the crest of his Squadron - dated 1996. He was either re-assigned, or perhaps promoted. ......................................................................http://gmic.co.uk/uploads/monthly_04_2013/post-6209-0-62725100-1366121720.jpgclick.......................

The following editorial excerpts are taken from The Medal Yearbook and Full Acknowledgement is given to them. I have always recommended this valuable reference book to medal collectors. The first covers the background to the Operational Service Medal - the next will cover the NATO Medal. ......................................................................http://gmic.co.uk/uploads/monthly_04_2013/post-6209-0-51469800-1366120527.jpgclick..................
