Here a boxed/documented numbered one. Not clear whether the box is original to the award (but hope to find out). Seller indicated it was awarded to a Mongolian diplomat who helped Afghan children during the Soviet period in Afghanistan. If anybody here knows Dari and could help with the document translation and also the number on reverse of the medal I'd appreciate it a lot. Thanls, Bob

Here's a number 608 with a different booklet. So approximately 500 awarded in a 12 year range.

Luck must be with the dumb (Dutch saying) - first time i really focussed on acquiring one and it was this exotic one. As long as we all keep sharing on this site we should benefit - and who knows, some day more details will be uncovered somewhere somehow. Probably most helpful would be to speak with actual recipients

When I googled Shejko I didn't get an excessive amount of hits so perhaps on a rainy day I'll try to click through them, send some "do you know this and this person" emails and see what comes out. Is there any formal documentation on this award anywhere? E.g. clarifying whether it was actually awarded in China or whether perhaps China just shipped off a boatload of these to USSR where they were "freely" distributed by the Soviet authorities?

I visited it a couple of months ago - can highly recommend it - especially on a nice summer day. Would advise you to stay in a town called Druskininkai (correct spelling?) - an old socialist time period spa resort which is now quite modernized and in a very nice, relaxed setting.

Here's an issued (to a V.G. Shejko), boxed, documented one incl. photograph. No more info than this unfortunately. Have been fond of this award for some time now and finally found the right one on eBay. Was at a dinner party a few months ago and the host had a picture of her father who was wearing this medal - somehow the conversation when off to another topic before I got around to asking all the details

Research availability will be (or: already is) a great moment in the area of Mongolian phaleristics. The downside will unfortunately probably be that the prices of certain items will presumably skyrocket and some of us here on GMIC will inevitably have to move to the sidelines with respect to further expanding our collection I for one am happy with the items that I now have in my collection and if I had to choose betwee more items vs. only current items but then with research becoming a possibility soon I'd certainly choose the latter. 2007 may have generally been a "slow" year in our area of collecting compared to the literally daily ground breaking exploration done on GMIC in late 2005+2006... but I suspect 2008 will become perhaps THE year for Mongolia collecting - best to continue to keep checking up on this forum on a regular basis

Ed - any clue as to the significance of 109.51? Doesn't seem to be tieable to the nr 52 Soyombo in a clear way which is a pity as having some sort of tie there would have allowed for a linking of other undocumented awards to recipients. An alternative way would perhaps be to apply the decree dates indicated for all Soyombo awardings in the book to a 1 - 430 or so mapping of awarded numbers if you know what I mean? That obviously assuming the Soyombo's were awarded in a numerically linear manner (which would make sense assuming that the full supply of Soyombo's was maintained in 1 central location by somebody who had some sense of organization:)).

Thanks forum-friends for your help. This award came to me as a result of a "weak" moment while browsing eBay... but I do like the international aspect of medals which indicate ties with Soviet Union or its "sister states" and hope to get more awards which link into this theme. Just won an auction for a documented (incl. photograph) sino-soviet friendship award as well as an Afghan Order of Friendship of Nations apparently awarded to a Mongolian diplomat... I sense a slippery slope

The medal was apparently awarded by the Korean Government and the document is issued to Captain Pindrikh Lei Shmulevich on June 5, 1949 Could somebody help out with translation of the document? Any more info on this award? Other countries with awards for Soviets to thank for liberation? Thanks, Bob

Just received a documented medal. With text on reverse and vertical pin. Showing the document here. Translation: "Distinguished himself for a speedy and responsible service towards the people, and for a good quality work". In other words... not very specific. Also not clear if a "leather"-like document is missing or not.

To put things in perspective, the first post in this thread refers to a group offered for sale to me at more than 10.000 USD. The group was not just not owned by the seller, but also not by the person he represented... as the group was in fact owned by somebody here on GMIC who I don't suspect will be selling it anytime soon. Offering a 10K+ group for sale while not owning it nor holding it raises serious concerns in my book.
