Awards and Veteran of WW1 sash in the National colours awarded to:- Transylvanian Heroine Lucretia Canja. Interesting to see two victory medals, (1 & 4). the one on the left being a French made Official version, the one on the right being a localy made Romanian unofficial award allowed by Romanian Royal Decree until the French made ones were available. 2. Two pictures that might be of interest:- An Israeli Air Force Cluster Bomb Container used as a Irish Batt U.N.I.F.I.L. Location sign in the village of At-Tiri in South Lebanon. I think its over 2 meters long. Inner sereated fragment of one of the actual cluster bombs. Sorry for the quality of pictures, I took them back in 1980 when stationed in At-Tiri with "C" Company 46th Irish Batt. U.N.I.F.I.L. Kevin in Deva. :cheers:

The National Military Museum has also the Royal Decree by which the Chain Set of the Order of Carol I was awarded to Marshal Alexandru Averescu on the 11th of March 1938. The document bears the mark of solemnity begining with the materials used. The parchement paper is written with Chinese ink and is adorned with nib drawings. At the top centre, there is the Romanian Coat-ofArms, beneath it, at a small distance, the chain set image id placed in a semi-circle. Ongoing on one side the ornamental leaf embroidery has got the aspect of a wide curling ribbon, made of creeping stem and brushed up acanthus leaves. The text of the document surrounded by the ornamentation is about the details of the Marshal's military carrier as a Secretary of State, and former Head of the Cabinet Ministers. Then there are the holographic signatures of King Carol II and Gheorghe Tatarescu, the Chancellor of Orders and Foreign Secretary ad-interim (until the end of March 1938. The stamped Seal of the Chancellor's Office sanctions the Royal Decree. Kevin in Deva. :cheers:

The Chain Set Degree is formed of the pieces that form the Degree of the Knight of the Grand Cross (a sash with the badge and the Breast Star) and a chain / collar set of 73 cm length. The chain is made of ten shield like cartidges, with twelve ciphers of King Carol I in between, all bound together with chain rings, On the cartridges there are the coloured enamel coat-of-arms of Muntenia, Moldavia, the House of Hohenzollern, Oltenia, and Dobrudgea (red,yellow, and blue.) The Royal Ciphers are captured in thin red enamel frames. The chain is tied to the back of a silver crowned eagle, cross in beak, spread wings on the main body of the cross. At the middle of the chain, in the front, hangs the Order's badge by the crown above it as part of the chain. Kevin in Deva. :cheers:

Close up of the Grand Cross Set. The Breast Star is a cross with nine gilded rays between the limbs and the badge of the Order on top of it (the eagle, with all the elements preiviously described.) On the reverse, in the centre, the legend "Berlin" (other Chain Sets have been manufactured by the "Weis" Jewellery Company in Bucharest) and a jewel pin. The Sash is made of blue moirè reps, with a yellow stripe at the edges crossed by a red thread. Kevin in Deva. :cheers:

Close-up of the "Commander" degree.The badge of the Order is a gold and red enamel trefoil cross, with nine gilt rays between the limbs. On the averse, there is a silver crowned eagle in the centre, cross in the beak, spread wings on the cross, holding a sword in the right claw and sceptre in the left. There is a gold medalion on the eagles chest with a left profile portrait of King Carol I, surrounded with two laurel branches, crossed underneath. A gilded ribbon with the legend in blue enamel letters: "Prin stàruintà la izbanda" (Through perseverence towards victory) unfolds on the reverse. The centre with the gold cipher of King Carol I is surrounded by a blue enamel ribbon with the legend: "1866 - 10 Maiu - 1906." Above the badge there is a silver and red enamel royal crown. ORDER OF CAROL I The Chain Set Degree. According to the law of its institution, the order was founded on the 10th of May 1906, in honour of the 40th Jubilee if His Majesty King Carol I. The sovereign had the status of Grand Master of the Order, and the Foreign Secretary was the Chancellor. Ony the Chancellor could solve the problems "reffering to the order." The members were appointed for life, (as many as 80) and they were divided into 4 degrees:- Commanders, Grand officer, Grand cross and chain set. The higest degree, the Chain Set (there could be only 5 at any one time,) could be awarded to the "statesmen", who had been Heads of the Cabinet Ministers for at least one year, those who had reached the top of the military hierarchy and had commanded a mobilized army in times of war, as well as to exceptional personalities in the science and arts fields, as an acknowledgement of the services brought to the country of Romania and all mankind. The maximum strictness in choosing the members of the Order can be noticed also from the fact that that for the First degree, Commander, one had to have 20 years of "Civil and Military functions" fullfilled "with honours". The Chain Set could be worn, by right, by the Prince heir and other Princes of the Royal family, from the age of 18. It could also be awarded to other members of the same family. It was also awarded to Soverigns, foreign Princes, personalities of other nations who had done special services to the Romanian State or who had distinguished themselves in spheres of human activities. Members of the Diplomatic Corps and Consulates in Romania could receive it, only if they had stayed in the country for at least two years. Romanian citizens could only receive it after getting the highest degrees of both the Order of Carol I and the other important Romanian Orders. Under King Carol I, the Chain Set of the Order that bore his name, was concieved as the superior Order, higher than all other orders in their highest degrees. The membership of Members of the Order could be lost for dishonouring deeds similar to those attracting the loss of Romanian citizenship. By changes under King Carol II, the Order kept only the Grand Cross and Chain Set Degrees. The National Military Museum holds three of the Chain Set awarded over the decades. Kevin in Deva. :cheers:

Hallo Stuart, to be honest, no idea, an item like this would in my opinion appeal to a specific collector in a no doubt small section of the collecting community. The item is hard to date unless a similar object could be seen in a period photo from the Balkans. Probably might be an idea to check some old auction catalogs related to East European firearms and accoutraments, or just ask for a 100 Euro at an auction. Kevin in Deva. :beer:
