    Friendship medals have been fairly often awarded in the last few years, almost always to foreign UN or NGO workers.

    Here's what I've accumulated about a year ago after a search on the internet:

    Ottawa, (October 21, 2004) ? Maureen O?Neil, President of Canada?s International Development Research Centre (IDRC), today received on behalf of IDRC, the prestigious Friendship Medal from the President of Mongolia, Natsagiin Bagabandi.

    7/3/2005 Valuing efforts and contributions towards implementing various humanity projects and programmes, the President of Mongolia N.Bagabandi released an order to award Mr. Llewellyn Peter Juby, ADRA Mongolia country director with "Friendship" medal.

    7/3/2005 The President of Mongolia N.Bagabandi released an order to award Dr.Brigitte Winklehner, Professor of Salzburg University of Austria with "Friendship" medal, valuing her contributions towards extending cooperation between Mongolia-Australia education sectors and higher educational institutions.

    2003.08.29 AWARD IS GIVEN: The President of Mongolia N.Bagabandi released an order to award the member of the Parliament D.Bazarsad with "Red Flag Order of Labor Merit" valuing his contribution toward border security of Mongolia. Also former Ambassador Extraordinary Plenipotentiary of Indian Republic to Mongolia Mr. Karma Topden was awarded with "Friendship" medal for his valuable contribution to develop bilateral cooperation and relationship of Mongolia and India.

    2003.08.26 "FRIENDSHIP" MEDAL IS AWARDED: The President of Mongolia released an order to award Mr. Hartmut Jungius, Director of East Europe and Central Asian program of the WWF with "Friendship" medal valuing his contribution toward developing Mongolia-WWF cooperation and protecting nature and environment of Mongolia.

    11/8/2003 The President of Mongolia N.Bagabandi released an order to award Mr. Ham Gil Son, rector of Han So University of Korean Republic with "Friendship" medal, valuing his contribution to the development of bilateral cooperation and relations in health and education sectors.

    September 1998 Uganda-born UNV gender specialist Christine Musisi received one of the highest honours bestowed upon a foreigner by the Mongolian Government: the Friendship (Nairamdal) Medal.

    September 2001 -- Mongolian President Natsagyn Bagabandi has awarded former UN Volunteer Alexander Menamkat the prestigious Friendship Medal, the highest award given to foreigners.

    July 16 2005? Under the decree of the Mongolian President, member of the Director Council of the US ''Mongolian Society'' and Mongolist Alicia Campy has been awarded with the ''Friendship'' Medal of Mongolia.

    Ulaanbaatar, June 25. 2005? Under the Mongolian President's order, the Defense Attache at the US Embassy in Mongolia, Colonel Thomas Wilhelm has been awarded with the Friendship Medal of Mongolia.

    July 18 2005? Under the decree of the President of Mongolia, the Acting President of Asia Foundation M. Fuller has been awarded with the ''Friendship'' medal. Mr. Filler made more contribution to strengthen mutual understanding and trust between Mongolian-American people.

    Ms. Linda Demers, UNFPA`s Representative in Mongolia since 1998 is leaving. On this sad occasion the Government of Mongolia, and the Ministries with which UNFPA is working, have shown their deep gratitude for the work of Ms. Demers.President N.Bagabandi awarded Ms. Demers with the ?Friendship? medal for her contribution in improving RH status of the population of Mongolia. Minister of Social Welfare and Labour, Mr. Shi. Batbayar, awarded Ms. Demers the medal of ?Top Notch Specialist? for her work in population and development.. Minister for Health, Prof. P. Nyamdavaa, awarded Ms. Demers as ?Outstanding Health Worker?. Deputy Minister for Science, Technology, Education & Culture awarded Ms. Demers with the highest ministerial medal for her efforts with improving the Reproductive Health Education in the formal and non-formal education system. Ms Demers had previously been given the Best Statistician Award by the National Statistical Office, and has received several other medals and honorary certificates from aimag governors, as well as a honorary doctorate from the Mongolian National University.

    Llewellyn Juby , director of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency Mongolia , on March 7 2005 received on behalf of ADRA, the Friendship Medal from the President of Mongolia, Natsagiin Bagabandi.

    July 2002 The highlight of the visit will be the conferment of the ``Friendship Medal'' on Dr. Joshi for his contribution in promoting Indo-Mongolian cooperation and friendship.

    Mr. Igor Makarov heads ITERA since 1992.

    He is decorated with state awards of different countries for significant contribution to developing economic relations and strengthening friendship and cooperation between the peoples.     Robert A. Scalapino is Robson Research Professor of Government Emeritus at the Department of Political Science, University of California, Berkeley. He was Director of the Institute of East Asian Studies between l978 and l990. His publications include 38 books and monographs, and some 525 articles on East Asian politics and international relations. Among his awards are the Order of the Sacred Treasure from the Government of Japan and the Japan Foundation Award as well as the Order of Diplomatic Service Merit from the Government of Korea and the Friendship Medal from the Government of Mongolia. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science, and a member of the Boards of the Asia Foundation, the Atlantic Council, the National Bureau of Asian Research and other bodies.

    Mikhail Grigorievich Voronkov : For his Activities in the development of chemical science in Mongolia he was awarded the medal of the Academy of Sciences of the Mongolian People's Republic. The Government of Mongolia awarded him the medal of Friendship and the order of the Polar Star.

    For the development and introduction into practice of polymolecular organo silicon coatings he was awarded the State Prize of the Ukrainian Republic (1982).

    His numerous and outstanding contributions to world chemistry have been acknowledged on several occasions.

    In 1975 he received an honorary doctorate (Doctor honoris causa), from Politechnika Gdanska. He was elected a Corresponding Member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society in 1976 and of the Chemical Society of Japan in 1990. He was also elected a foreign member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences and a member of the Union of Latvian Chemists in 1992.

    In 1983 he received a title "Honorary chemist of the USSR" and his name was included in the "Book of Honor" of the Ministry of Chemical Industry. He was also a recipient of the Premium of the USSR Council of Ministers for the creation of organosilicon materials for use in microelecronics and special ceramics (1991).

    For the creation and development of the chemistry of pentacoordinate silicon M.G. Voronkov was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation in 1997.

    He is a veteran of the Great Patriotic War (World War II) and took part in the defense of Leningrad. He was awarded the orders of "Great Patriotic War", "Red Banner of Labor", "Friendship of Peoples" and "For Great Services for the Motherland", and 18 medals.

    Friday, Apr 18, 2003, Alberto Galluccio, outgoing representative of the Italian Economic and Cultural Promotion Office, received the Friendship Medal of Diplomacy from the government yesterday, as he wraps up a three-year stay in Taipei before taking up a post as the first counselor in the Italian Embassy in the US.

    01/06/2004 Mr Lengsavad presented his country's Friendship Medal to 13 teams and 23 individuals in Vietnam for their contribution to border demarcation and strengthening relations between the two countries.

    Donald C. Johnson From 1993 to 1996, he served as United States Ambassador to Mongolia.In 1996, the Mongolian President awarded him that country?s "Medal of Friendship" in recognition of his work as Ambassador.

    A Group Of Russian Diplomats Were Awarded State Orders And Medals Of Mongolia

    On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Russia on November 5, 1921 the head of the Mongolian state, Natsagiyn Bagabandi, issued a decree on decorating a group of Russian diplomats with state awards of the country.

    One of the highest awards of the Mongolian state, the Order of the North Star, was conferred upon Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov, deputy head of the presidential administration Sergei Prikhodko, deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov, deputy director of the 1st Asia department of the Foreign Ministry Nikolai Pavlov and deputy of the State Duma (lower house of parliament) Yevgeny Primakov.

    The Nairamdal (Friendship) Medal was awarded to Rector of the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry Yury Fokin and Vice-Rector of this Academy Anatoly Illyuk, Vice-Rector of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations Valery Vorobyev and head of the Mongolian division of the 1st Asia department of the Foreign Ministry Ivan Mostyka.

    MONGOLIAN PRESIDENT WANTS STRONGER TIES WITH

    VIET NAM

    Ulan Bator, July 18 (VNA) -- Mongolian President Natsagiin Bagabandi said he would continue to create every favourable condition for all ministries and agencies and people of all strata from Mongolia and Viet Nam to promote bilateral exchange and cooperation in all areas.

    "These will help strengthen the relations between the two countries in the new period," President Bagabandi told Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen The Dac, who made a farewell call to the President before ending his tenure of office in Mongolia today, July 18.

    President Bagabandi expressed his pleasure at Viet Nam's achievements in the renewal process and the new steps of development in the Mongolia-Viet Nam friendship and cooperation.

    He also spoke highly of Viet Nam's role and prestige in the region and the world as well.

    On this occasion, the President presented the Vietnamese diplomat with a Friendship Medal of the Mongolian State.--Enditem

    He was awarded for long-standing commitment to the promotion of classical music, creation of many splendid themes, ballades and operas, including ?Chinggis Khan? opera and promotion of Mongolia?s culture internationally.

    By the decree of the President of Mongolia, N.Baasanjav, councilor doctor at the 3rd Central clinic hospital, Sh.Bira, prominent scientist, Sh.Dashtseren, director of the bus company were bestowed a title of Hero of Labor of Mongolia and golden medal.

    100 years old General became a Labor Hero

    President of Mongolia N.Enkhbayar, released a decree, conferring lieutenant-general TSEDENISH Bazar with state?s top award, Title of Labor Hero, Sukhbaatar Order and Gold Medal, in recognition of his outstanding efforts in serving the country: a demarcation of national borders, signing international treaties, which ensured the security of those, studying the history of border troops, strengthening the security of the national borders and promoting external relations of Mongolia.

    SHAGDARJAV Ochir, executive director of coal mining ?Shivee Ovoo? incorporated company, has been bestowed a Title of Honored Miner of Mongolia.

    Appraising long-standing service in governmental and non-governmental organizations, commitment to the purpose of strengthening the telecommunication sector, training new specialists and bringing significant foreign aid and assistance, GOTOV Dakh, Chairman of the Mongolian Association for cooperation with pacific countries, has been awarded a Title of Honored Telecommunication Worker of Mongolia;

    TOGTOKH Galsan, chief-doctor of Gobi-Altai province?s Tugrig som?s hospital, was awarded a Title of Honored Doctor of Mongolia;

    When I was in UB, they had coverage on TV of awards ceremonies, together with interviews with recent awardees. All in Mongolian, so it went over my linguistic head. Nice images though.

    So far, they are still awarding (nasty brass versions of) the old awards. There is much talk, however, about changing things, and setting up new awards. :( There is a chance they'll involve Someone Who Knows A Lot about Mongolian awards in this process. We may hope so, as they've certainly come out with some ugly and ahistorical stuff so far.

    Mongolia confers top honour on Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

    Bangalore, Aug 24 (IANS) Noted Indian spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was Thursday conferred the Order of the Pole Star, top civilian and military honour of Mongolia, in recognition of the contribution his Art of Living Foundation has made to the nation.

    President of Mongolia Nambaryn Enkhbayar conferred the award to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at a function held in the presidential palace in Ulan Bator, the Art of Living Foundation said in a statement.

    Receiving the award, Ravi Shankar said: "It (the award) is a honour not to a person but to the ancient philosophy and spiritual tradition of India."

    He is currently on a three-day visit to Mongolia.

    During the visit, he was welcomed by several top leaders including the president, who has undergone the spiritual programme known as Art of Living. Thousands of people attended his functions during, with more than 10,000 people present at a session on Sudarshan Kriya, a rhythmic breathing and yoga programme developed by Ravi Shankar.

    "The visit has brought great joy and happiness to the members of the Art of Living family," said a devotee. "By visiting Mongolia, Guruji has honoured the feelings and fulfilled the desires of thousands of Mongolians," she added.

    Reacting to the overwhelming response of the people of Mongolia, Ravi Shankar said: "The visit has strengthened the long spiritual connection between India and Mongolia."

    The visit coincides with the 10th anniversary celebration of the Art of Living in Mongolia.

    Ravi Shankar also held a brief interaction with the Dalai Lama, who is now in Mongolia on a low-key visit.
