I dont think there were that many back then, but unlike many other items, they seem to be indestructable... and most seem to have survived,I think they were not really for snipers, but basically for any fixed position. Here is my shield, repainted poorly for the events (rust does not blend in with grass and earth very well ). It was recovered from Delville Wood on the Somme in 1991 and is heavily pitted as is yours. It must have been at fairly close range since it dented the plate and left three radiating cracks. The slot is open and used for a handle and the leg which can swivel side to side is held securely by the mysterious hook to keep it from getting in the way or getting caught on things. JensF. Posted October 14, 2006 Share Posted October 14, 2006 Nice display Du Frontschwein The shield is the standart Infanterieschutzschild 16. I also got one (posted it a longer time ago). The most of them were returned in 1917 and 1918 to make steel helmet from them. Its the same high quality chrome-nickel steel they made the helmets from.
