Chris Boonzaier Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 These are no "arranged" they are just acting as a space filler for now... the heads are original, the caps as well, the wifes uncle did the "sticks" for me.
deptfordboy Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 (edited) Very nice, particularly the shield! Was all of this booty purchased, or was some of it the product of battlefield rambles? Gilbert Edited October 11, 2006 by deptfordboy
Mike Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 Hi Chris ...I have almost the same sniper shield but , I've never been able to find a picture of one being used. ...have you seen any ? Mine came out of Latvia and , it's seen quite a few Winters as well
Chris Boonzaier Posted October 11, 2006 Author Posted October 11, 2006 Hi,I have only seen a couple in photos. I dont think there were that many back then, but unlike many other items, they seem to be indestructable... and most seem to have survived,I think they were not really for snipers, but basically for any fixed position.
Mike Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 I agree ..but it seems that everyone always reffered to them as "Sniper Shields" ...I could never picture a "Sniper" carefully hiding his position and then getting up to take a picture of what a good job he did with the camo
Tony Posted October 11, 2006 Posted October 11, 2006 A slightly different shield was on ebay the other day, I think it went for 150 ?Nice set up Chris.
Daniel Murphy Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 (edited) Chris, Nice display. Here is my shield, repainted poorly for the events (rust does not blend in with grass and earth very well ). It was recovered from Delville Wood on the Somme in 1991 and is heavily pitted as is yours. After 75 years in the ground it still works.Dan Edited October 12, 2006 by Daniel Murphy
Daniel Murphy Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 On the right side, as you look at it, there is a bullet strike from a non armor piercing bullet. It must have been at fairly close range since it dented the plate and left three radiating cracks. One of the cracks goes all the way to the edge and one other is very close, leaving a wedge of steel just hanging on. Dan
Daniel Murphy Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 Here is a back view set up for carrying. The slot is open and used for a handle and the leg which can swivel side to side is held securely by the mysterious hook to keep it from getting in the way or getting caught on things. Dan
Daniel Murphy Posted October 12, 2006 Posted October 12, 2006 On the back near the top left, there is a stamp "363" to indicate what steel lot it was made from.
JensF. Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 Nice display Du Frontschwein The shield is the standart Infanterieschutzschild 16. I also got one (posted it a longer time ago). The most of them were returned in 1917 and 1918 to make steel helmet from them. Its the same high quality chrome-nickel steel they made the helmets from. Thats why the most shields you see nowadays are relics. Here are some pics of these shields in use.
Chris Boonzaier Posted January 13, 2007 Author Posted January 13, 2007 Any idea of what the shields looked like the Sturm-Abteilung Rohr experimented with in their early days? The ones that were supposed to be carried by assualt troops?

I believe its a Russian one thats standin still at the time of the picture. Kevin in Deva Edited January 13, 2007 by Kev in Deva

Tony Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 That last card has a nice clear shot of these... although they are set up backwards !Perhaps they've just started basic training.
Chris Boonzaier Posted January 13, 2007 Author Posted January 13, 2007 Perhaps they've just started basic training.Or the one said.... "Look heinrich... in 90 years time you will just be a long dead face on an old postcard..... if you want to evoke any interest and conversation..YOU JUST PUT THE BLOODY SHIELD UP THE WAY I TOLD YOU TO !!!!"
Kev in Deva Posted January 13, 2007 Posted January 13, 2007 (edited) Just maybe they think it looked better this way.
