MG1918 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Eric thanks, but there are collectors out there, including you, who have much more varied and in-depth collections than I. Serial 221 is I thought a German smallish armourers chest but I cannot find anywhere the kit layout or diagram. Here is the outside view:
MG1918 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 There is a stamp on the smaller 'ammo tin' and will photo later. Yes you are right about artillery equipments and I suspect only period photos will confirm any MG use. I am working on the principle that in the early days of MG long range, direct and indirect fire, like the British MG users, the only items available were field artillery instruments. As we know the MGC mastered indirect fire long before the Imperial Germans did but there are some German specialized MG kit items, like your lovely cased long arm protractor. Presumably only coming into use in the last year of war their numbers a relatively small. Mark
MG1918 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 German equivalent of the previous example and some other form of compass viewer. Mark
Hoss Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Mark The last is an ally survey instrument by Hahn mid '20's the boxed job is artillery goertz and zeiss also made em both wars. go to compassipedia not only is their site incredible the gent who runs it is top draw to double check. I sent him a picture once to help out a waf (yuk!) member not only did he get back prompt he took time out to confer with a fellow collector to make sure the info was correct. The box kit blast! its not the same as I have a picture of I'd rather not post without permission.....oh well uumm dunno its unusual for Jerry to just stamp a box 'tools' isn't it? . btw does your fold have that tiny spanner still there? the little blighter I've never figured out what its for,,, pictured in Dolphs book showing the tools. Eric
MG1918 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Do you have an image of the spanner you mention Eric? As to the small tool/armourers chest. I still believe it to be 100% German and for the MG08. You are right that most boxes seem to be marked for the MG08 or MG08/15, but this is a very early box. So for example in 1914 there was only one MG - so no need to mark otherwise! I have seen one image of a similar box that contained 2 locks, with the same marking on the lid. Anything Finnish I think would be much more 'modern'. Look fwd to the question on the MG08 tool roll. Do you mean the wrench? Mark
MG1918 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 (edited) Not included in this set, however as superb as Dolf's book is, there are some errors. This appears to be a very very small spanner and small items are the last thing any soldier in any period has in field equipment. As you say what function it serves is a good question. Chip Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 Eric, There is at least one more of these MG parts inserts at the Royal Belgian Army Museum in Brussels. It used to be on display, but since they remodeled many of the old displays have been removed. Chip
Hoss Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 Thanks Chip I think there is a diagram of one in a maxim parts schematic as well came out of lock I rebuilt. Speaking of firing pins I once approached a specialist machine shop we used in car racing if they could make me some pins and gave them an example to study draw up etc. They could $320 each on a run of fifty, including hardening of course! the price would come down if I ordered more than a hundred!! Eric
Hoss Posted August 15, 2014 Posted August 15, 2014 Interesting pic check the large wheel and the mount. Eric
