SA helmet

Here's one you won't see every day. Walked into a Michigan gun show during the fall of 1984;

SA M-35dd, Q64, SA-brown in and out, 1939-dated domestamp.

In 35 years of being around these things I have only encountered three SA combat helmets; this example, the helmet shown in Baer and another, once owned by Steve Dukes in the early 70's. Were it not for the SA meatball the helmet would exhibit no damage at all. Shortly afer application, the decal was very likely damaged by the chinstrap bale of another helmet having been stacked-on.

GREAT HELMET! ALTHOUGH THE SA GLADIATOR HELMETS ARE MORE PLENTIFUL, THE COMBAT STYLE HELMETS ARE VERY RARE. AS MOST SA MEN WERE NOT FULL TIME, I DOUBT IF THIS HELMET WAS EVER INTENDED FOR THE STANDARD RANK AND FILE. MOST LIKELY, THESE HELMETS WERE UTILIZED BY HEADQUARTERS GUARDS AND POSSIBLY HONOR GUARDSDURING THE WAR YEARS.

Hi Bob,

Those were my thoughts as well. A photo in Baer shows an SA 'guard' opening the door of a Kubelwagen for some high-ranking SA officer.

The condition of the helmet would lean towards an official guard duty or something similar, the paint is superb! And the decals are almost mint. I have never seen one of these in colour either so I thank you for showing it Cody

I don't collect helmets but I do get excited when I see staggering rarities like this. Hard to visualise something rarer than the black Allgemeine-SS helmet, in M35 terms, but you've just posted it for us to look and wonder at. Amazing! The only Third Reich-era helmets as rare as this are the M36 and M37 parachutists' lids. Magnificent.
