    I'd tend to just rub some oil over the surface and leave it at that.

    You could go over it with 00 guage wire wool beforehand but you may also scratch some of the remaining paint while doing so.

    Somewhere I read that you can boil it in distilled water and the rust turns to black oxide - then seal it with a dab of oil and it should be OK for a few decades at least.

    IF you do the above method, before sealing it with oil, remember to dry the Cross thorughly with a hair dryer, as any water / moisture inside the silver rim will rust the Iron core unnoticed :o

    Yep - I was thinking that people would do that - but its still a asfe warning to remind folks.
