EK 1939 My first one. What is it?

I just purchased this today. My first EKII. Can anyone tell me about it. Can't really make out the mark on the ring. Thanks.

Also, should I clean the crud off?

Here is the reverse. Scanner is horrible. Need to recharge my camera.

Hi can't tell from the photo, what the MM is. Advise you may find on the forum is don't clean the crud (often called age patina)off, it tends to add to the character of the piece. At best give it a dusting with a soft brush to remove any loose dirt, and keep it in a dry environment to prevent any rusting of the inner core. Looks to me like a nice original piece

Agreed! I would leave it alone as well. The patina and character add to the fact that (presumably) this was a field worn piece which I admire as highly as my mint Crosses.

Looks better with some light thrown on the subject, and personally I would not clean it apart from

a light brush up with an old tooth brush.
