Mike Dwyer
Picture 1 is a Gefreiter (corporal). Picture 2 appears to me to be a private.

webr55
It looks like the first one is from a Garde regiment.
bob lembke
It looks like the first one is from a Garde regiment.Yes, Garde, or one of a very small number of other units allowed to wear the Garde Litzen ("lace" on the collar and cuffs). Not a medal guy, but I think that the EK was only worn in that fashion, hanging from the EK ribbon in the button-hole, when just awarded. So probably the photo celebrates the award.Anyone know how long the cross was worn like that? The day of award? A few days? Would a EK I also be worn like that before being shifted to the left breast? What is the meaning of the crossed ribbons? Bob Lembke

Bob LembkeI believe that the EKI was presented to the recpient in its presentation box and the awardee pinned it on himself at his leasure.the 2nd class was worn like that during the presentation ceremony and just afterwards and then removed, the crossed ribbons is just the way it was attached to the uniform, the ribbon was actually threaded through a button hole and wrapped around the edge of the unform to keep in place, no pins were used.regardsAlex K
