Going through a couple regimental/battalion and other award rosters, about 25-35% of enlisted men I reckon got only a state award-no EK2 for them. He was a wheelwright-- and per post #9 of page 13, per protest by his employers, the North German Brown Coal Works in Helmstedt, he was demobilized 13 September 1917 to return to his civilian occupation (essential to war production apparently) although fit for frontline service.
