Thought I would show off one of my little pride and joys - All the American Defense Medals with Bars.

    1. Here is the basic medal issued during the National Emergency declared By President Roosevelt From September 8 1939 to December 7 1941

Medal 3 with BASE bar is for service on shore at bases/naval stations outside the United States (this included Alaska/Hawaii)

    Posted

Last is the FORIEGN SERVCE bar for Army members serviing outside CONUS

Note: I'm not sure being stationed in Alaska/Hawaii qualified.

    Hey Chief,

I have never seen these bars before! Nice find. Do you have them all or are there different ones out there?

    Best regards

These are all the official bars for the AD medals. However if you look in Kerrigan's lastest book, 1990 edition he shows one with a "patrol" bar which I believe to be a WWI bar attached later. I've never seen any other references for other bars. I may have to go over to the OMSA forum and ask them.

Thank you for sharing the info on this medal!

    Hi Bill,

Welcome to the GMIC!! I hope that you enjoy your stay!

    Hey Coastie,

Can you make a closeup scan of the reverse of the medal? I had no idea that there was that much writing on the back.

Why is the FOREIGN SERVICE one a different shape to the rest?

Coastie, may I use your images of them on my website please? Hadn't seen them before.

Sea, Base, & Fleet are Navy-Marine Corps - Coast Guard Bars

Foreign Service Bar was for Army & Air Corps (It resembles WWI Victory Battle bars)

    It is indeed!!

What was the "Limited Emergency" in 1939?

The limited emergency was in reaction to the war in Europe which even though we were neutral we did provide support to the allies by way of "Lend Lease" and protection of convoys. Also it was necessary cut loose funds and to gear up arms production. The medal was a morale booster to give to the troops something to show for the effort. I guess you can say that this is really the first "gedunk" medal for just being in the service and not really doing anything to earn it.

It's been a while since I had looked at this thread. I forgot to include the "A" that goes on the ribbon bar that denotes Atlantic Fleet service.

The US Mint made a limited run of these medals prior to the war which were issued to the Navy/Coast Guard/ and Marine Corps - These medals are found in a white box with the words American Defense on the cover in blue lettering
